While I was at Uni a girl I knew was seeing our Gylfi for about a year, he was a Reading player at the time and just becoming a big player, I bet she's kicking herself that they broke up.

I no ppl like to give beckham shit because of his image but he was srsly underrated as a footballer...if siggi was half the player beckham was he'd b better than he is now
Not saying Siggy is anywhere near Beckham but your specific gripe was that he wasn't quick, agile and couldnt dribble... I can count on my fingers the times I saw Beckham take someone on, turn himself out of trouble or use a trick.

Point was he didn't need to as he had other skills in spades. Use Siggy properly and he can be a very dangerous player for us. When he first arrived I remember him creating some stunning opportunities for Lennon in particular through the middle.

Point is, like a lot of our players, we've insisted on shoehorning them into the wrong position and we all wonder why we're so underwhelmed?

There's a decent player there. Having said that, I would still prefer Holtby back.

Siggy is like a number of our players ..... good enough for a mid table position but not going to take us to the next level. However I would give him a chance on the right if that's what he thinks is his most effective position.

JDK JDK Sherwood played Siggy where you wanted him. Didn't think he was particularly bad or good. Average performance, above average performance compared to other team members that day... No point in playing in him against Liverpool if he won't stick with Siggy for atleast a match or two more. If you/Sherwood/others believe that Siggy can be effective as a CM then play him there. Everything to gain and nothing to lose. I'm just skeptical whether of not he can be effective.

I was far too dismayed to watch the game with a critical eye. For the record my plan was to try him there after the Liverpool game as I thought throwing him to the fire at Anfield probably would be productive for no one.

Your last couple sentences pretty much sum it up my opinion. I don't know if he'll be effective in that spot but there is no reason not to give it a try. He clearly has ability, we just have to figure out if we can harness it properly in the system we want to play. Guys like Sigurdsson who don't have a true position are always tough to figure out.

As far as I saw he mostly kept possession by going backwards. But he did have a few nice passes in the final third that ultimately led to nothing...

I completely agree. He has ability without doubt. Kill me now, but he is like Dempsey. Not in terms of play style, but in terms of both are much better players at lower teams where they can be the stars rather than role players at bigger clubs. Neither Dempsey nor Siggy fit into our system at all imo. Both completely different, both flawed players, but both have ability. If that ability can be harnessed by Spurs at CM then please let it be.

I was actually thinking about Dempsey too and how troublesome it was to have both of them in the team last year when neither had a strongly defined position. We've had a lot of trouble with this lately. There's still debate about the best positions for Chadli, Bentaleb, Paulinho, Holtby, Sigurdsson, Lamela and Townsend. Eriksen and Dembele too have been played out of position.

Obviously you want to have versatile players but sometimes you can have too much versatility. At some point you just have to stick a couple of guys in defined roles and positions and let them master it.

I'm hoping for more certainty come next season as well. I think Chadli has looked far better behind the striker than at LW. That being said, I'd rather have Eriksen behind the striker. I honestly don't know where Bentaleb plays in midfield. He's played CDM and looked very good at times and not so good at times. Played CAM and looked very good one and not so good maybe once or twice. I think Paulinho works best at CM but with a strong CAM and a strong CDM. If Sandro gets back to full health and Eriksen develops more I believe Paulinho could be a major goal scorer for us. I just don't know if he is the type of player we need at CM though. I wouldn't be opposed to selling him based on him fitting us rather than selling for performance/attitude issues. Holtby same as Bentaleb. I don't expect Siggy to be around next season. Lamela I don't really know. Haven't seen enough of him at all to even guess. Townsend I believe right now works best on the left, but his future is on the right. I do believe that versatility will help us with where we are right now. When we bring in another manager hopefully the players we already have can adapt to his style and we won't need to instantly buy a whole new crop of players.

It's very perplexing because in a lot of situations they end up stepping on each other's toes like with Eriksen and Chadli who I also think both look best in the middle.

Lots of decisions for our new manager to make. It sucks that it's a World Cup year and our preseason will be shortened. We really could use every day.

I feel sorry for Siggy. Really should have been given a more advanced role with bigger, stronger players around him. Same goes for Lamela and Eriksen in the first half of the season. Should not have played most of it on the wings.
