Ex-Spurs Player Harry Kane

Latest Spurs videos from Sky Sports

Harry Kane (and other England players) should not be judged on their performance for an increasingly duller and duller England team.

If England were to do the unlikely and win the World Cup, it will be because we bored the opposition into submission.

I wasn't bored last night. It was an excellent game for a Nations League match and England played their part. It takes two to tango sometimes and with the high tempo game Germany play under Flick, it was always going to be a decent watch. England had enough chances and near moments to win two or three games of football.

England play with no runners in behind. The wide players mostly ball hog. We also currently seem to play with no creative minded midfielders, and Southgate chooses our most defensive minded fullbacks to go with it.

But Kane still scores plenty. And he does look sharp for England, its just when he looks for that ball over the top there's nothing on.

When England got their shit together and Grealish/Bowen started actually putting the ball in to the box, hey presto Kane looked very lively because service actually existed..

6 shots each on target. 1 clear cut chance between the 2 teams. Englands goal coming from a last minute penalty. 37% possession.
Not exactly a pulsating affair was it.
The Hungary match was more what I expect from England though. Never look like scoring a goal at any point.

Couldn't care less about the Hungary game. That's been and gone. Same as I couldn't care less if you enjoyed it or not really. I did. Every team has it in them to have a bad performance in them against sides they should be beating and England are no exception. On another day, Harry could have had a hat-trick against Germany. England had more shots than Germany (same on target, but still had far more attempts) and more corners. Which goes to show you don't need to have much of the ball to create moments and half-chances. For all of this talk about Germany being so much better than us, I can remember Pickford having to make one decent save all game. They just pressed much better than we did and looked after the ball far more on the night. As long as we look like scoring, the opponent can have the ball as much as they like in my eyes as long as we're not running around like headless chickens wasting energy.

We created next to nothing against Hungary which was dissapointing, especially when we beat them by four goals only a year or so ago. But nobody can say we didn't at least look like scoring against the Germans.

You're talking about one game

I'm talking about 4 years.

“…no service blah blah…Southgate blah blah…. Lucas blah blah… Son blah blah… Sterling blah blah… Nuno blah blah…”

Yeah, and the non-spurs England fans think Kane is shit without service. Kane can be either chance creator for the guys getting into scoring positions or receive the passes. He just needs temmates to use their brains a bit.

That Grealish cross leading to the big Neuer save was almost a carbon copy of the Kane header against Germany for the second goal at the Euros.

I constantly slag off Grealish for being a ball hog, and it speaks volumes that he's the one most likely to deliver that cross.

I don't know how much of it is down to teammates not using their brains and just the profile of player that they are. Grealish is a dribbler, he needs to hog the ball to be effective. It's why he's struggled at City, he's not some world class passer of the ball, he's an elite dribbler of it. That's where he has an impact on games, by drawing defenders in and beating them.

We have a few of those. Sterling is another massive ball hog. I do think Grealish is better in this regard as he's more likely to get a proper cross in at the end of it, as he did for Kane's goal vs Germany in the Euros for example. He was great at that for Villa and I do think will benefit from a proper CF joining City now. Having Foden on the right will benefit the balance of the team too, Saka/Sterling is just too much.
