If Veliz was playing U21 football he'd be scoring fucking bucketloads btw, not forgetting he's already scored in the Premier League with barely any minutes.

IMO the club let him down massively with a shit loan that was likely about finances that helped him none in settling into English life/culture/football and saw him play fuck all because of some power struggle at Sevilla.

Some people must have watched a different game to me. Bergvall was far and away the stand out player for me. I thought I’d be reading loads of hype, but seems not many picked up on how good he looked.

Read comparisons to Hleb and Eriksen…. lol what? He made many tackles for a start.

He oozed class and reminded more of KBD and Modric, vision and poise but actually really fast and physical with great dribbling ability.

Sorry, I’ve just absolutely hyped him now. Hope I’m right.

Is that true though?

He had no issues starting and playing a 17 year old Kubo at Marinos.

He gave minutes to plenty of academy graduates at Celtic and has shown he isn't afraid to play young players here... Giving debuts to Donley and Moore.

Went into last season starting a 20 year old Udogie, with zero Prem experience at LB... A 20 year old Sarr who the previous manager didn't care for in central midfield...

Ultimately, you can only bring through those you THINK are good enough. Ange has always preached the importance of developing youth.

It's no surprise for the first time in the clubs existence, every age group mimicked Angeball.
There's no question that Ange will play young players - in fact, I think he prefers to. You only have to look at our first game last season against Brentford, where he threw Micky straight in after only a couple of training sessions with the team. It was also a risk to play Udogie beside him.

The Academy is a bit more of a question mark. He's spoken before about the importance of bringing players through, however he's also said that does that when they've earnt it, not just as token gestures.

He played academy kids quite a bit early on at Celtic, however that was mostly due to necessity. They suffered the usual Postecoglou first year injury crisis and various youngsters were handed their debuts, yet most fell back out of the team just as quickly. That, I think, was purely down to them not being of the required standard. Ben Doak would have probably been the exception, who he threw on for his debut at 16 years old against Rangers (in a match that was still kind of in the balance) but he ended up leaving for Liverpool soon after.

So it'll be interesting to see what this season brings. His Euros punditry may have given a hint when he was talking about young players and the impact they're having at the highest levels of the game, and I think we're gonna see a lot of Gray at the bare minimum. With the reported interest in Moore, he's probably going to want to get a look in during the Europa and cups and I don't think Bergvall has come to fill out the under21's squad either. Who we see beyond those three is anyone's guess.

Djed must be training well otherwise he would not have been given the chance. Also that is maybe the best game I've seen Porro play defensively.
It would be dreamland if Spence were to have a turnaround.
Is it just me or did he actually look younger and less Snoop-like around the eyes tonight?

Think it was his timekeeping that got him into trouble. It’s the easiest way into a managers doghouse.

And that cross he put in for the goal was absolute class.

What level do you reckon he should go on loan to hopefully get consistent minutes?

Said in the youth thread a few days ago, it's hard to make an assessment of what level he's at when he barely played any minutes last year and Argentina go straight from an u20 to u23 team so not been playing youth international games either. At least when Sarr wasn't playing under Conte, we could see how he was developing in Senegal games. Can't say I saw that much of Veliz playing before but there was a decent amount of excitement around him, particuarly how strong he was in the air.

Yeh spot on, thought he was incredible. And do see a bit of the KDB in him, he's all over the pitch, dribbling, wanting the ball, passing forward, crossing, driving with it. So dynamic. Ran the show in that 2nd half, definite stand out player for me (& there were many)

Enjoyable kick around. Positive first run out in front of a crowd. Decent showing from all but especially the youngsters. Great to see a pipeline of real talent coming through. They need to work fucking hard and they can be superstars - the raw talent is there.

Veliz stats in Argentina were 17 goals and 2 assists in 53 appearances (3,666 mins = 41 game equivalent).

But stats are variously that 300 - 600 footballers play outside Argentina at any one time, and that's why Argentina league is pretty lowly rated (well below the Netherlands league for example).

So its probably fair to say he's used to playing and scoring against footballers who would be regarded as L1 sides in UK.

And its a big jump from that level to PL.

Given his lack of football since June 2023 (when he played for Argentina u20's) and March 2023 when Argentinian league seemed to end, I think a loan to a L1 or Championship club is probably where he needs to be - I think the Seville loan was more about player/agents ambition (Seville had been wantijng to sign Veliz in opposition to Spurs) and was always too high a level for him without the seeming power struggle at Seville which saw him rarely make the squad.

Just to put a couple of facts out there, Argentina league is ranked about 17th/19th depending upon the source whereas Championship is ranked about 5th best in world football - so even a Championship ;loan would be a big step up in level of competition Veliz is used to playing. And the Netherlands league (where Parrott scored 17 goals in less games than Veliz in Argentina ) also a step up from Argentina league for Veliz

Only two things to take away from that friendly:

2. Djed Spence`s half

Ahhh fuck it, I´ll throw in a third:
