Performance How far away are we really from challenging the top 4 again ?

Latest Spurs videos from Sky Sports

Recruitment is definitely key.

But the squad is a lot stronger than 12 months ago after recruiting Bergvall, Gray, Odobert and Solanke (the first two improved a lot in the first half season, and will become far more consistent and improved next season) last summer, and then Danso, Kinsky and Tel - with a question mark over Tel on loan and whether he has done enough to buy (at less than the 60m) or loan again. So repeat another 4-6 quality recruited players and we improve again.

We now have a full squad (see below) so its a question of upgrading where we can to get into top 4 - but to get to the very top we need to get a couple of really top class players either through developing those we have or some of our very good youngsters who at 17 to 20 are at a good age.

Spurs 25 man squad used this season after removing Forster, Whiteman, Davies, Regulon and Werner (all contracts expired – Davies and Werner have significant playing time in 2024/25 needing to be replaced next season)

GK's (3) - Vicario, Kinsky, Austin,
CB's (4) - Romero, Van de Ven, Dragusin, Danso
FB's (3) - Porro, Udogie, Spence,
CM;s (5) - Bissouma, Bentancur, Sarr, Bergvall, Gray,
AM's (2) - Maddison, Kulusevski
FWDS (8) - Solanke, Johnson, Son, Richarlison, Tel, Odobert, Moore, Scarlett

Everyone will have their own ideas, but improving on even 6 of the above would make a huge difference
You follow those on loan. Which of them if any is ready to step up like Gray & Bergvale did this season?

I think there is a definite element of corruption, particularly officials and the favouritism towards the usual suspects.
But to say the whole thing is fixed is a stretch. Young footballers are generally thick as mince. No way they could execute something that machiavellian.
Watch the goalkeepers and the refs. Some of the defenders who 'give the ball away' too.

You wouldn't need all the players.

I don't care about getting in the Top 4, 5, 6 etc if we do cool...

Challenging for top 4??? no we should be competing for Titles & Trophies...

We should be aiming to compete for domestic Trophies while being consistent in the League & if that consistency makes us play in Europe then I'm fine with that.

I've been consistent on this position for over 20 years - Titles & Trophies mean more than League position after 1st.

Wrong title for the thread because it is back to the chase for top 4 and not trophies. We start the season on 0 points like everyone else and with a new Manager and a good transfer window we should have a much better season. A better title for The thread title should be 'Are we good enough to challenge for a trophy and ensure European qualification via the PL'

We have changed the majority of the squad in the last 2 years and that does not help build teamwork. We have enough young players for the future both in the team and out on loan and instead of bringing 4-6 players in on lowish transfer fees and wages we should go for 2 major signings. We sadly lack a player that can win a match on his own like Hoddle, Bale & Kane etc. Whilst the top players will be put off by our current league form, we should still be able to attract an influential player better than we have now.
I would be surprised and disappointed if we perform as badly in the league next season but have concerns that the new Manager under instruction from Levy revert to resting players in the cup games leading to early exits.
THIS POST 100%

I still can't believe people are still clinging to league position even after we've discussed it soo much on this Forum...

Villa were in the championship recently.

Things can literally change in a season but it’s about good and smart investment.

That’s a whole other story

Do you think it's possible to go from top 6 (or indeed bottom 6) to title challenging without first first making the step in to 'top 4' for a year or two first? I think it's about progression and is a marker that you are heading in the right direction

Sure but why would Top 4 be the destination?

It should be the journey but for our bald leader and the Premier League marketing department, Top 4 should be considered as good as winning is for the big clubs

It's not progression...Progression is winning Trophies...

Here let me explain...

Only 1 team wins the League to gain the Title & each season 3 teams get relegated while 3 new teams compete. When the season resets, everyone goes back to 0, which means that it doesn't matter where you finish in said League if it's not first guess what???

YOU LOSE & ALL 'PROGRESS' IS LOST WHEN IT RESETS.

A successful season can also mean winning the Trophies you are in a tournament in whether Domestic or not which history shows no one cares what league finish you're in because???

YOUR TEAM STILL GET TO KEEP THAT TROPHY

It's not the destination, it's the next step/marker for our progression - it's a logical topic for a thread
Nope it isn't

This topic seems to be a bit of an excuse for people to get on their soapbox and shout about how much trophies mean to them and how they are all the better for it.

Have a look at where in the league nigh on all the trophy winners of the last 20 odd years have finished.... if you want the club to be challenging for and winning the title & CL AND the domestic trophies then you first need to be in the top 4 conversation, it's a fact if the game.

No you don't have to be in the Top 4 at all to win a Trophy.

This isn't a soapbox it's a fact.

I think this is due to mostly inpart to the media's coverage of the PL. Like getting higher payments which isn't that much relatively speaking which doesn't affect any fan, it doesn't cause lower costing tickets or merch infact the opposite in most cases also a 'chance to play in Europe' like that's a trophy in itself which boggles me.

To get the chance doesn't mean success - fact.

If it makes you feel better being in the Top 4 having Sky Sports talk about us constantly & getting giddy of a 'Top 4 Battle' then fine but Top 4 doesn't mean anything unless you win a Title/Trophy - fact

I've been there many times with Spurs too many years & I've held this view consistently for 20 of them.

The data says otherwise - trophies are shared almost exclusively by the top 4 clubs in whichever season.

This is just projection/textbook soapbox grandstanding 😂 I haven't said anything to suggest i see Top 4 as the aim or that i would celebrate being in it the way you are suggesting so why have you responded with that BS - I want to win trophies and titles, I just recognise the steps of the ladder that need to be climbed in order to reach that point. You aren't a better or more real supporter because you don't understand that

I think if you subtract Ange and replace him with a bang average manager, the talent level when healthy would have us around 10th.

There's no attacking threat against decent opponents, we can't defend to save our lives, and I don't think any manger you could name would be able to resolve those problems himself.

And if the rumors are true of Romero leaving and possibly Kulu, the talent will be declining. Even if these players are sold Levy isn't likely to spend the money this summer, and we all know excuses are more plentiful than snowflakes in the winter window as well.

Realistically, the future probably contains Ange leaving, some other manager taking over this squad minus Romero, and trying to shore it up while Levy decides to wait and see.

I expect next year will entail another boring mid-table finish, only a modest improvement, but not nearly as embarrassing as this year.
