Player James Maddison

Latest Spurs videos from Sky Sports

And grealish has?

This new dude is southgate's puppet creature ,but that's good I can continue to ignore and not watch that garbage

Grealish offers something unique to the squad i.e ball retention and he plays off the left which is our weakest attacking area.

Maddison is just another creative midfielder. We have fucking loads of those. He needs to do more to make the squad.

Carsley played him through the middle though....... JGs OG and (debatably) better position..... Where he played his most mercurial football.

Probably. But he’s in there for his ability to play multiple roles. Maddison would be pretty rubbish on the wing.

Again, mainly Grealish is there because when we need someone to retain the ball, he’s useful. England lack players who do that.

That in itself is a contentious claim......... Depends entirely what you want from the player.

Not really. Man City would never have paid 100 million for Maddison. Nobody would. Grealish has genuinely elite attributes and his peak at Villa as a main man was better than Maddison’s peak at Leicester.

There’s a reason one is at Spurs and one is at Manchester City, and a reason one has had an England career and the other hasn’t.

Literally no-one else would have paid that for Grealish either.

Considering half of that time was spent in the champo vs Maddison being a key player taking Lester to Europe and an FA Cup that's some pretty hollow bluster fella.

Grealish - EPL (who's 2 years deeper into his career):
23/24: 3G / 1A
22/23: 5G / 7A
21/22: 3G / 3A
20/21: 6G / 10A
19/20: 8G / 6A
18/19: 6G / 6A (Champo)
17/18: 3G / 5A (Champo)
16/17: 5G / 5A (Champo)

Maddison - EPL:
23/24: 4G / 9A
22/23: 10G / 9A
21/22: 12G / 8A

20/21: 8G / 5A
19/20: 6G / 3A
18/19: 7G / 7A
17/18: 14G / 8A (Champo)

Grealish dribbling in and out of trouble looks nice and drawing fouls is handy; but if we're talking the "attribute" of scoring and assisting then Maddison has proven the far superior player.

Meh... What Gary does or doesn't do is no measure of who's the better player..... Esp. as he froze both out for much of the time they were available.

Sure they would. United were very interested at the time.

G/A is so far away from the full picture. Grealish is an elite level player with an elite portfolio. Maddison gets goals and assists at prem level but has nothing outside of that level.

Grealish = a go to man for Pep when games were big. He isn’t a productive player but he is a player for big matches.

What Grealish dribbling in and out does is draws fouls, keeps the ball, retains control of the game.

"Sure"........... ?

No; far from "sure". There never seemed much question of him going anywhere else in that window and before his new contact and the all important 100m release clause:

"Grealish was targeted by former Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer during the summer transfer window last year, but the playmaker opted to stay at Villa Park and signed a new long-term contract until 2025."

Nothing to suggest Man U would have paid anything like 100m though. It was a ridiculous price that even Villa didn't expect anyone to actually trigger.

(His contract before re-up was actually similar to that of Maddison when we bought him and his price would have reflected as much.)

I didn't say it was the full picture..... We're trading and comparing attributes..... In those terms JM pisses all over JG. He massively outscored and assisted JG in the champo too even though he was younger at the time.

...Like I originally said; it depends what you want from your player. Most clubs look to their CAM for G&As.

Outside of the context of an already dominant, controlling Man C there's not much evidence of that.... He wasn't controlling games at AV he was mostly 'swashbuckling' and creating chaos for others to feed off of.

Regardless; even if one concurs that JG is superior in that sense it absolutely remains a toss-up as to whose the better player.

I like Maddison but it does concern me that he was part of a team that was relegated. You have to question what was happening in a dressing room like that. Great player but how badly does he want to be winner?

Similar thing happened last year after his injury…

needs some actual footballers with him. whats do you expect him to do? how is maddison going to make son, johnson and werner useful and give us 11 v 11? hes not a magician.

what you reckon he would play like if he had actual footballers in there with him instead of useless wide players who offer fuck all? if you stick another playmaker in there like bergvall it opens up for madders, they have two actual footballers to worry about then and not one. they aint worried about son and johnson having space! they are only going backwards, or johnson trying to cross through 3 defenders.
