Ange playing him LB for a couple of games was interesting. He was as sound as a bell last night. Perhaps he sticks around until Jan if Udogie fitness problems persist.

Really enjoyed his performance today. Two very good shots, one assist (should have two but Mickey robbed him with poor header), never lost the ball. Didn't have a chance to show much on defence. Happy for the lad.

Surprised how good he looks at left back. You could see him going straight into midfield when we regained possession. Really good when we were attacking , Might get some more starts as Udogie obviously not ready yet. Everyone will say , can he defend . They are still saying it about TAA….No they are saying he can’t defend.
If he starts the first game v Bayern we might find out a bit more. Surprise moves by Ange with Gray and Donley but if it works out we might save some money if it gives us two good back ups.

I don't think it's all that surprising.

Certainly offensively anyway. In this system to be able to play fullback, you need to be comfortable at receiving the ball inside and comfortable playing centrally with good technique and awareness.

Donley ticks every box for an offensive inverted full back. It's defensively where he may have issues.

I don't really see it as a position he'll even play competitive minutes in, it was just a good fit for him and a way of getting him minutes and fitness under his belt due to how stacked central midfield is (same reason we've probably seen Gray and Skipp also play out of position)

good spelled s 'e..x..c..e..l..l..e..n..t

The only issue with him is pace - was his England youth group's best striker but spurs persuaded him to drop back to being a no 10, and that I can only think was due to the lack of pace meaning his chances of being a top striker were affected by his lack of pace, whilst as no 10 his technical excellence/creativity would be unaffected by lack of pace.

As an inverted LB, he ticks all the boxes technically but has a lack of pace to really make it in that position. tbh, he's probably good in most positions as his technique is really top drawer

4th successive start as inverted LB this preseason.

Given he's never been seen playing there before, that's got to be a huge compliment to him...... and this didn't stop him from his old ways of getting an assist for Moore, hitting a post and a good save from goalkeeper otherwise a goal in Japan too.

I wonder what suddenly made them thought, I know let’s try him at left back
The funniest possibility is that they started scouting for someone with a similar profile to Udogie, and the software spat out Donley's name.

But tbf I think it is quite common for midfielders to be converted to fullbacks. And Ange wants his football to be more about roles than positions so if Donley can fill the role then go for it.

Yeah definitely give him a try. I thought he was more of a ten though. Would be wonderful though if he can play the position. Does he have the pace I wonder.

I just hope we aren’t messing with his development by trying him there
