So many questions with that. Will Dier regain his form and can he do what he used to do, drop in and out of CM/CB positions. If that’s the case it might not be that bad.

But at the moment I wouldn’t be happy with that because I feel we need a DM in between winks and Ndombele.

I agree yes a new CB is very important, but I think a new DM is equally as important perhaps more. I don’t think Sanchez/Dier are world class like prime Toby and Jan were but I think they could get to a decent level if they have the right protection in front of them.

And perhaps that would give Sanchez some time to grow in to the player we hope he becomes along with Foyth ofcourse.

I just think a new top class DM solves a lot of our problems, and we won’t concede as many opportunities for our back line to deal with.

My main hope is that one way or another - regardless of Dav, Foyth, Dier and any notions of development - that we can at least start next season with one stalwart dependable CB to lead the back line.

Personally, I think intended formation is key in terms of our broader recruitment efforts, what I would say is that i think recruiting a top end DM would defo help defensively and unlock the true potential of Winks, Ndombele and Lo Celso within this squad.

Subject to CB personnel, either or of the following appeal to me:

[FB] / [CB] / [CB] / [FB]
Winks (Lo Celso) / DM (Dier) / Ndombele (Lo Celso)
Lucas (Lamela) / Kane / Son (Dele)

or

[CB] / [CB] / [CB]
[WB] / Winks (Lo Celso) / DM (Dier) / Ndombele (Lo Celso) / [WB]
Son (Lucas, Dele) / Kane

Both would lessen the blow of losing Eriksen without need for a direct replacement (if we're gonna opt to recruit strong in that area it'd blow a massive hole in our budget right off the bat).

I think there is a fair chance that both Sanchez and Foyth could both turn out to be very good players. That we might not need to buy CBs, or maybe just one.

Surely, Foyth's silly mistakes and over ambitiousness can be trained out of him.

Also, Dier was excellent in the past - maybe he will become the player he was.

You think it is likely that United are wanna sign Dier then?

They wanted to a few years ago under Mourinho (read Poch's book) and according to reports he wanted to go. He was a big Utd fan growing up

Some kind of decision needs to be made with Dier and quickly. He has a contract till 2021 so next summer he will have one year left on his deal and we can see all the hassle this causes, so either he is offered a contract extension and a decent pay rise now or in January we look to cash in

I know, that was in the summer of 2017(!) after a season in which he had started 40+ matches for Spurs.

That player still exists, the problem is at Spurs he has lost his way for whatever reasons. For someone prepared to take a chance he is a good player to purchase. As has been said Utds centre midfield is not strong and a fit fully motivated Dier would walk into that side

I think they will go for other options than a player who has started 5 matches in the first 9 months of 2019, but we will see. It was just one sentence in tabloid the Metro, there is no reason to talk about Dier to United until there is some concrete news.

I tend to agree with both of you. For both player and club's sake we need to shit or get off the pot re: Dier.

There's an increasingly strong case that we need to return to playing a proper DM again; yet all 3 of our current options come with a question mark above their heads for differing reasons.

...I pay the Metro article no mind though.
