To be in this position shows how badly we have been run & mismanaged. That no signings summer is proving to be a massive mistake if we now need 5-8 really good players.

Yes and no Scott. Yes I do believe and always have that a good club is always pro-active but when we look at the pressing areas required now or will be in the future very few of those areas had genuine issues 18 months ago.

GK - Lloris was fine, he's just getting to the stage when we may have to consider something more long term. Impossible to replace him summer 2018 IMO

RB - Aurier was a year into his time with us. Difficult to say if he would come good but a year and a half extra tells me it won't work out long term, that's how it goes.

CB - Sanchez & Foyth were also a year into their time with us and sadly I don't see them taking their games onto levels where I'd regard them as mainstays, week in week out for the future. It happens but we did attempt to be pro-active and that's all we can really ask of the club.

DM - Dier hadn't had his health issues by then and whilst Wanyama did have an injury that he struggled with that season, it's difficult to know he would continue to struggle a further year and a half on etc.

LB - very well stocked with Rose not being on the decline and Davies still peak mid20s. Sessegnon was a smart buy as we phase Danny out, if anything just to see if Ryan could be a viable long term option.

AM - Eriksen was making noises that he'd be open to staying but I do get the feeling Grealish was being lined up ever to help with the Dembele burden or to long term replace Eriksen. The deal was there, we did everything right IMO it's just a massive takeover with Villa last minute gazumped us.

Backup FWD - We had Llorente and Lucas trying to develop his game.

When you look at the squad back then there really aren't many massive holes in it. Hindsight will tell us that we should have been ruthless in certain areas, probably most with Dembele having a year left on his deal but the reality is we had been proactive or at least tried to be, it's just the kids we hoped would crack it haven't taken their games to Adonis levels which, mixed with injuries and a genuine lack of form for players like Vertonghen, Aurier, Wanyama, Dier, Dele, Eriksen etc has battered us hard.

Do I think that the summer of 2018 could have been dealt with better? Yes I do 100% but I still stick by my belief that no players signed and money kept for future investment made more sense than seeing us blow our loads on players we didn't really fancy thus leaving us hamstrung for future windows. We gambled on a Grealish deal, spurned the likes of Maddison in favour of him and it didn't work out like windows do sometimes. We've given too many too long to come good which you need to sometimes it's just a shame we haven't seen a couple kick on at a time where others have regressed.

1-2 in that window perhaps but we didn't require major surgery like I see us requiring now.

What type of player is Vecino?
Sounds like another 8 that can play as a 6, maybe. But outside of being a CM, no clue.

Article from 18 months ago, which makes him sounds a lot like Harry Winks in the 2nd paragraph:

Profile: Is Matias Vecino the solution for Chelsea's midfield?

So what’s so special about Vecino? Well, he was one of the unsung heroes of the first half of the campaign, the cool-headed passer every midfield needs. A strong presser, the Uruguayan makes a lot of tackles (almost two per game according to Whoscored), is a good runner off the ball (and into the box) and works diligently in keeping possession ticking.

Rarely the kind of player to try the through ball, the 25-year-old has a great read of the game, and is instinctively capable of finding the right pass to a man in space. He is the difference between giving it away quickly (basically every midfielder before him in a five-year span at the San Siro) and helping the team either counter or establish itself in the opposition half.

I posted a video you get a clear idea of how he plays from it

But back to the case in point, where were all your posts from the last couple of years demanding we cash in on Eriksen?
So are you saying that we have to have expressly stated something previously in order to now state that we would have been ok with that previous something?

If so I'd like to get this on record that I'm happy for each and every player in perpetuity to leave for big money (especially big money out of proportion of their actual value/ability) and reinvestment/improving of the squad. That got me covered?

Considering scott scott 's usual takes it seems in line with his views doncha think? There are some of us that are ok with moving players on as that is a fact of the modern game.

No what I’m saying is that someone who spent years slagging off our policy and saying the chairman should pay our best players whatever they want, and keep them at all costs has no right saying we should have cashed in on them when they were peak.
