It may be a rarely held opinion, but I think the "damage" of the windows with no transfers is significantly exaggerated in general. If you look at our transfer business in the recent era (post-Bale), we're typically looking at 4-5 in and 4-5 out combined over the summer and winter windows. In general, at least 1, if not 2, of the outgoings are quality contributors we'd rather keep but can't. Of the 4-5 incomings, we're basically 50-50 on whether or not they make meaningful contributions. About 1 in 5 transfers we actually hit on something good and get a quality squad fixture from.

Obviously you can't forecast anything perfectly, and maybe we'd have signed the next great thing...its entirely possible, but most likely given our recent track record we'd have traded 1 key contributor, 1 decent squad option, and 3 dead weights for...1 key contributor, 2 decent squad options, and 2 flops.

Likely Out (going on contemporary reports): Toby, Dembele, Rose, Sissoko, GKN
Likely In (rosiest picture I can realistically paint): Martial, Grealish, Lascelles, Sessegnon (eventually signed anyway), Barrios

So we basically have the same squad we have now except Toby = Lascelles, Moura = Grealish, and Barrios = Ndombele. Add Martial to the mix as our 1 big hit. How many points better off are we? Not a meaningful amount in my mind. That summer certainly isn't the difference between us winning trophies or not.

I don’t necessarily disagree. Those windows aren’t the reason we can’t win a title. Even if we were active we wouldn’t be as good as Liverpool and City. But those two teams were/are on all-time great runs. Granted, I know your point wasn’t arguing against this take.

But I do think we’d be better in the table right now if we weren’t absent that summer. Not being active for so long is why we are in awkward situations with outgoings. I feel like it really brought down the morale of the club despite making the amazing CL run.

Is anybody else thinking what i am ? That we need a striker, CB and both full backs.
But have got 2 midfielders who may be good but also may not, again the super cheap 2nd rate option.
Well done levy we can definitely kiss the champions league goodbye, with the ambition being shown we don't deserve to be in the champions league..what a joke, as always......

Is this the same club whose 'planning' has us in the position we are in right now? The same club whose planning provided us with a Sammy-summer? The same club that has allowed us to go without a suitable backup striker for 5 years and allowed our plan B to walk in this very past off-season? Not trying to rehash those things other than as backdrop to say why would continue to place your trust in said club to get it right? Seems less 'trust' and more 'blind faith' is needed in this situation considering the current problems we face were easily foreseen.

It's the same club whose planning over the last five years has seen us qualify for the Champions League four times consecutively, get us to the Champions League final, make multiple semi finals and one who have a really healthy financial state whilst doing so.

You say they've left us with no suitable backup striker for the past five years, you do realise that during that time we've had Soldado, Adebayor, Janssen and Llorente all whilst Kane has been doing what he does right? Let's be honest Parrott looks a real prospect we don't want to be harming his progress and our move for Dybala was a little bit Grealish-esque agreed but with us brining in Ndombele, Lo Celso. Sessegnon. Clarke, Gedson & Bergwijn in the last 5-6 months you can see the rebuild is well underway.

We've had a ropey season but every team does every now and then. I'll reserve my judgement on how we did until after the new guard properly settle and we see if they have the goods.

Which still only amounts to 17.6m....

We paid the thick end of 30m for Sessengon FFS.
25 million

Tottenham sign winger Ryan Sessegnon for £25m and midfielder Giovani lo Celso on loan

I think it's reasonable to say that the best case given those squad changes is that we're 10 points better this season. Even 10 points better, we are only 4th leading Chelsea by 4 points and trailing 3rd by 4 points as well. Poch is still the manager...that's likely the only meaningful impact in my mind. Whether that's better or worse depends on your opinon of whether or not Poch eventually could have won something here.

happy with our dealings thus far but if we don't sign a striker i will be furious. We are not winning games, because we dont have a striker. If levy doesnt pull his fucking finger out - he is basically saying, i dont care if we don't finish top 4. Tight cunt

Speaking of which how in the fuck did Vardy get back so fast? Wasn't he supposed to be hurt? Or am I mistaken? I imagine Mane will be back this weekend too from him 'pulled muscle'.

The WWE/John Cena recovery program.... Declare 6 month recovery time when the doc says 3... Add loads of steroids.... Back in 2 weeks. :angryscouser:

(Radio comms said JV looked dreadfully off the pace.... Suggesting that they'd rushed him back; potentially to his longer term detriment.)

So just in case people haven't seen it...

On SC there was the following cryptic yesterday:

If you soil upon Hamlet, you will find your reward.

Hamlet? Danish player, perhaps? Oh wait, a follow-up hint emerges...

Look for an anagram.

Okay, err....

Just the 'soil upon' part.

Right. Err. 'Polonius' then? So which player is that? People making a connection that Polonius sent someone to spy on Laertes - who had gone to Paris. PSG, perhaps...

Direct A&C quote:

Finally.

One of Polonius's most famous lines is "Neither a borrower nor a lender be"

So, the solution to the cryptic was that we'll be doing a lot of loans before deadline day. We were also told a striker in on loan

The coronavirus would be too good for those cunts.
