Which players from the Championship? And which foreign players in the current squad would they replace?

Dunno as per which players in...... I don't watch enough to start rattling off the names, but that to me ought to be the strategy. The point being, less financial risk (more £££ for so-called 'dead certs. without the HG shackles) and less immediate emphasis on the player 'making it'..... (Of course we paid too much for him, but the fact that Sessengon is floundering without hampering us is kinda the blueprint.)

Outgoing names? Much easier.....

TBH, there's very few of our squad I'd desperately cling to... All about the future now. In short; anyone that can't make an impact under Conte between now and the summer.

Dier & Dav
Bergwijn/Gio
Giollini
Lucas (age)
Davies & Rodon + Doherty (see European spots)
Ndombele & PEH (less likely to tank, but still have to earn their retention as we look fwd)

All I've seen of this guy was the game vs Liverpool in the CL and I thought he was fucking horrendous .. obviously could've just been a poor game by his standards, but christ was he awful. Responsible for multiple goals and never looked sure of himself.

I'd also wonder why he's not starting for Portugal when Patricio isn't all that either.

yh i heard that but hes improved alot and only 21 remember or 22 not sure

McGrath is pretty good for us, would prefer Pope tbh

So apparently McGrath has been linking us with lots of players from Jonathan Barnett's agency who then go on to sign a new contract with their club. In the summer it was Bamford and Ward Prowse who both renewed their contracts after being linked to us. I wouldn't be surprised if the same thing happened here with Pickford and he signed a new contract with Everton where he only has 3 years left to run.

Tricky innit......

By the HG players show top-6 promise in the EPL they're too expensive for our bench. Once they show top-4 promise they're pretty much too expensive for us period.

As per prev. posts on the subject I think our most feasible approach would be to get value from the international market in term of improving the first XI and then plough the champo for fringe project players and cyclically churn that level of the squad to keep the HG quotas ticking over (which of course hoping that the academy can drop a gem on us once in a while).
This where solid succession planning is crucial. Yes, you won't buy someone to sit on the bench, but if you have a long-term vision you will buy someone to be your starter in the next 1-2 years at most. We should be buying players to be understudies, sell our current starters for some decent dosh, and then bring them in to become the starters. Rinse and repeat. Or, in other words, do a Dortmund.

It's a win-win from so many different angles:
1. The understudy pushes the starter to perform at a higher level
2. You don't care about losing some of your star players, because you have someone ready to fill gap
3. You sell players at or near their peak and get maximum returns for them
4. You spend less for players, since you're bringing them in before they explode on the scene

However, all of the above require an established footballing philosophy that won't change from manager to manager. And of course a top notch scouting department that will identify the players that fit into that philosophy. And that is where we have gone astray a bit. We have lost focus of our footballing DNA and it looks like we haven't spent enough on the scouting side. There is no excuse for a club with the best training facilities and best stadium to not have the best scouting and analytics.

Well, the idea is that since they’re HG they would be replacing Dele, Winks, etc.

One other thing, it’s really just not viable to have THREE players who are HG in the PL but not in Europe. That’s an impossible squad-building task.

Doherty is an easy one to jettison in that regard.

Hopefully things are about to change on that front.... (See new scouting revamp post in Paraticci thread).
