Transfers January 2022 - Transfer Window

Latest Spurs videos from Sky Sports

Yes - January 2008 transfer window saw Spurs re-sign Defoe and Keane plus about 3 other first team squad players.

Moving back to January's transfer window, my guess would be Kessie being brought in as a CM from AC Milan as his contract ends in June 2022, so fee is low and we know Spurs have continued to work on Vlahovic (striker) who would certainly fill a gap and maybe a 3rd player coming in.

We'd need to sell at least 2 overseas trained players - Doherty would be the obvious one, but I wonder if Lo Celso's time at Spurs might be coming to an end as he has rarely impressed at Spurs - and with Kessie coming in I doubt if Lo Celso would get any playing time.

If we could identify a suitable HG player who is available, maybe Winks would move on, but not sure who the incoming HG player would be

Can't see Milan selling Kessie in January, he's pivotal to their title push, the fee would have to be stupid for it to make sense to them, best we might do is a pre contract.

It's not an easy window to make "important" purchases. Nobody wants to sell their best players halfway through a season.
There’s this underlying current that continental clubs, especially Serie A, are going to be financially forced to offload players, or at least that seems to be what Paratici has convinced Levy and I guess Conte of?

We do seem to be targeting some players who are out of contract at the end of the season, I dunno, it’s an interesting subplot.

I think the best thing we can hope for is to get useful, not transformative, players that enable us to play the style and formation that Conte wants better and provides more stability in the team rather than guys who will come in and individually vault us to the top 4.

I know they have been mentioned already and that might mean nothing at all but for example Brozovic and Romagnoli are two guys that aren't world beaters but would provide us with help in areas we need in Conte's system, LCB and deep lying MF. I think both guys would be realistic buys.

They don't make us comparable to City/Chelsea/Liverpool but they also mean we aren't asking players to play above their ability in roles they can't handle, ie. Dier and PEH.

The turd in the punchbowl is that neither Paratici nor Conte (nor Levy nor Hitchen) is well suited to solve our growing HG problem

It means either identifying young talent probably in the Championship and paying over the odds for them, or taking a punt on an Ashley Young type or two on excessive wages.

Young himself isn’t a bad shout.

There are some reports that his form has been slightly poorer this season compared to last, and also they may want something rather than nothing.

hmmm...he's been pretty decent the games I've watched, though he did have an injury early in the season I think. I just can't see them sacrificing him for peanuts whilst they are in the title hunt- he's pretty pivotal to them IMO. I don't hate Bakayoko as much as some, and they might have brought him in with this in mind, but he's definitely not as good as Kessie.

3/4/5 years ago I'd have taken Brozovic and he had a 25m release clause back in 2017/18 time, but not now. He's 28yo, getting slower by the day (and was never the quickest) and would just end up a non HG old geezer we need to shift and can't in a couple of years time. I'd much rather wait till summer and bring in Kessie, or if we can't get him, maybe someone like Tchouameni for that 6 remit? Both of whom have age upside and can play in CM2's as well.

With the manager pull of Conte, if Levy does deliver some big spending in next 2 transfer windows, we could have a team that seriously competes for the league:

Agreed, but its papered over for the moment :

Club trained - Austin (3rd GK). Tanganga (CB/RB),, Winks (CM) Kane (striker) - total 4
(Skipp counts as u21 this season, needs registering next season)

Other FA Club affiliated trained - Dele (CM/AM), Sessegnon (LB) - total 2
(We have signed Clarke ........ but do not think he will be good enough, and have signed youngsters Lavinier (RB/LB) and Omole (CB) but both need loans to develop experience to show they are good enough to play in our first team )

Were Kane, Winks and Dele to leave next summer, without bringing in other HG players we could find ourselves with a maximum of 21 players in the squad next season - less than we might want.

We do need to ensure we continue to bring through players from our academy as Club trained players = ideally 2 or 3 more in next 12 - 24 months (Scarlett John, Devine, Markenday, maybe White ........) to cover some of the HG shortfall. But not sure they will be good enough to fill the gap next season.

We really could do with signing a decent HG player in January or summer - was horrified we semed to pull out of buying Jarrod Bowen almost 18 months ago, not a wirld beater but certainly a decent squad player - Wham picked him up for £18m plus add ons, scored 5 and 3 assists last season.

If Milan know he is walking fir free in June, they might do worse than accept say 20m from Spurs in January and spend money to bring in the replacement in January too - most pundits think Italian clubs have been much worse affected by pandemic than PL and are in desperate need of cash.

So its a deal that might suit both parties, even though its a compromise for both - Spurs paying more they want, Milan getting some money and patching up their squad in January.

Depends on the price but waiting until summer means that we are playing this season at a big disadvantage. I don't think he is ideal but we have nobody to play that role for us now and Brozovic should not be too expensive or against moving to the bench next season if replaced in the summer.

As for the HG issue we have enough foreign deadwood to move on that I am not too worried about it.

Getting Brozovic in January shouldn't prevent us from getting either guy you mention in the summer.

Why do you think Conte would play a 3-4-3 instead of his usual 3-5-2?

If we had Raphinha already maybe but I am not sure he would bring him in to move to the the 3-4-3. The only reason he seemed to play that at Chelsea was because of the players he already had.

You’re right that he’ll play 3-5-2, especially with the squad he currently has.
But if we do buy a quality RW; Conte is adaptable enough to switch to 3-4-3.

I think LCB is our obvious weak spot.
Romero is nailed on in the centre and Dier/Tanganga/Rodon are passable at RCB for now but Davies may in fact be our best LCB option which is a worry.

I do wonder if the security of the back 3 will allow Conte to finally unlock the Hojberg/GLC/Ndombele midfield 3 that looks good on paper.

I'm also not sure either of our full backs are good enough going forward for Conte so we may have to go down the converted winger route - Lucas and Bergjwin could be of use here.

Reguilon is very well suited to LWB, no?
