Transfers January Transfer Thread 2024

Latest Spurs videos from Sky Sports

Norwich are 13th in the Championship this season, but could see themselves becoming part of the battle for the play-off positions if their form continues. After a slow start to the season, they have now improved, only losing two of their last eight league games. This sees them only five points off the top six.

Manager David Wagner has already said that he wants his team to not get too carried away with looking at the league table, and for them to just focus on the next game as he wants to keep his team grounded in their hunt for a finish in the top six.

This January window could be key for the Canaries, as they look to bolster their squad, and try and keep hold of their star players in the next month.
One man who has starred for Norwich this season is Jonathan Rowe, with his brilliant form reportedly catching the eye of Premier League clubs Brighton & Hove Albion and Tottenham Hotspur, according to a report from the Daily Mail (31/12 paper edition; page 84).

The 20-year-old is the Canaries' top scorer so far this season, scoring ten goals in 24 Championship games so far this season, whilst also claiming two assists.

The winger has already garnered plenty of attention from Premier League clubs in the past, with Wolves reportedly having a £15 million bid for him rejected in the summer transfer window.

So it could be tough to keep hold of the England under-21 international in January, but the player's contract does not expire until 2025, so Norwich are in no rush to cash in this wind
My Norwich supporting mate really rates Rowe … fast, intelligent player, 10 goals/2 assists from 24 games is a good return for a 20 year old. Could be a good Championship pick up, and we’ve missed out on a few of those recently…

I’m not so sure. I don’t think Levy likes to realize a loss on transfers - struggling to think of many outgoings where he “admitted defeat” and sold at a loss. My biases could be clouding my memory here of course.

So anyway, I suspect that LoCelso’s 55M purchase price will be a stumbling block to any sale. Particularly with LoCelso in form - I suspect that Levy wouldn’t sell him at loss right now. I think he’d rather roll the dice that LoCelso’s good run of form continues and value goes up .
Exactly, that and the fact Ange has said it’s great to have him back as he’s been injured is a clear sign ange has some faith in him. He’s also regarded very highly by his countryman, and if you look at him on the sidelines getting involved with things you can clearly see his passion.

So personally I’m slowly changing my opinion of him as I feel he’s not a bad option from the bench. Players like Dier have fallen off a ledge, their form is shocking and they should be shipped.

No, you are thinking emotionally and saying last game = value of the player for next 3 years. Which is 100% absurd.

Rational and cold solid facts (upon which business decisions are done) are -
- We de facto purchased him in summer of 2019 for 48 million euros.
- Since then he has been on 2 separate loans to Villareal in total for 1,5 seasons; in there he played 2970 minutes which is equivalent to 33 games; which is less then 1 normal season worth of playing time
- Villareal did not buy him after that relatively long stay / testing period
- He will be 28 yo in start of April; when we brought him he was just 23. By summer-time (assuming he will not be offloaded) 5 years have passed, which is very big part of footballers career in top of the game
- Prior to this season, with his 2,5 seasons he had earned just 4594 minutes for Spurs out of which only 2667 came in EPL. So over very long spell with us he played equivalent of 30 full games in EPL. Across period when we played 95 full games.
- Over this 2,5 seasons he played as AM and managed to score 1 goal and give 3 assists in EPL. So it can be concluded he failed under three different managers (I don't include Nuno nor interim caretakers).
- In current season too, he has just played 411 minutes out of 1800 that we have played in EPL. That is THREE YEARS worth of proof for future potential buyer.
- He is on 80 th EUR per week; this is amount that most clubs just cannot pay. In EPL it's nothing special. But outside EPL + Bayern, PSG, Real, Barca, Atletico, Juve, Inter - this is massive salary.

You can state emotionally, that "well, yea, but under Ange...". To which answer is simple -
- Ange has deemed him fit or good enough only for 23% of minutes in Premier League
- Ange is OUR coach, so for buyer... whose coach... is NOT Ange, it does not matter. Ange is our club specific factor that is not there for buying club.

And if he is available for 1/3 of the time... and he'd be 30 mil player with 80 thEUR per week... quick math says he has to play like a 90 mil player on 240 thEUR per week when he is available. Which he does not.
And whatever club that would buy him would give him 3y contract, which means his sell-on value is close to 0. So.. yea. I am fully sure this will not happen in real. Business-world.

Thus - no one who bases decisions on rational factors would pay 30 mil for Lo Celso.
Also - considering all the proof we have- even his salary alone is not worth keeping him around and giving him extension unless he is willing to take like a 50% paycut. There is 0 point of paying 80 th EUR to player who is there for less than 1/3 of a gametime.

I’m no speculating on what other clubs would pay on the market.

I’m looking objectively at the facts. Ange told GLC he’s wants him here. He’s now used him regularly when fit and expressed his satisfaction with what he’s got from him. GLC can play 8 or 10 so covers 2 positions and helps in the build up vs the press.

To replace that will cost more than 30m unless we get lucky on a young player. More like 50-60m

I don’t see us spending that in January so it makes sense for Gio to stay until at least the summer. Maybe even beyond that. If he continues playing this well until the summer he will have 6-7 goals and 6-7 assists. That’s a valuable CM player.

2024 has arrived, and with it comes a fresh dose of chaos in the form of the January transfer window.
It’s usually a period where there are few big deals done, with clubs more focused on loan deals or outgoings of unused players during this period.
However, with clubs looking to become ever more thrifty under the watchful eyes of Financial Fair Play enforcers, the free agency market is one that most will be perusing through.
Premier League, LALIGA, WSL and more. The world's best football is on Optus Sport. Sign up here.
There are a huge number of players who will be out of contract at their current club come June 30 but January 1 is an important date, as it is the date where clubs can begin negotiating with these soon-to-be out-of-contract stars.
However, under English FA laws, players can’t negotiate with or sign a pre-contract agreement with a team within the same league – so a player currently at a Premier League club cannot sign a pre-contract agreement with another Premier League club. They can only open talks a month before their contract expires.
The rule is there in a bid to avoid conflicts of interest in the event a player may face their future club before leaving their current one.
Premier League clubs are, however, able to sign pre-contract agreements with players from teams in other leagues.
Here’s who’s currently available as a free agent in come June 30…

Don’t want MBappe

No dickheads:ange-arms:

The only thing that matters with Lo Celso is how we expect him to perform over the life of the next contract. He could have been terrible for 4 years… if we expect him to be good over the next 4 then we should offer him a new contract.

We are mainly talking about his injury record and his availability.

Please, do come up with better metrics to base our future decisions then his own actual track record in the same field.

And YES availability is very important part of ability.

It is fairly simple - if you say that he is worth the current 80 thEUR per week... and historically he has been available for roughly 1/3 of the time. Then it is quite easy. We absolutely can make new contract with him. On level of 26,6 th EUR per week.

OR if we take his value so far under Ange, where he has featured roughly 23% of the time, then his new salary could be 18,4 thEUR per week. I would have NO problem if we prolong his contract on either level.

Agreed, it is a huge simplification.

But bringing Kane into the discussion is totally pointless. Harry Kane is unique player.
There is no such player and there haven't been such player in world football in at least 15 years. He is one of the best strikers in the game.

While PEH is "a midfielder" - likes that you can find tens and tens in top leagues.

PEH is a commodity who can be easily replaced by large number of other alternatives, so his value drops much faster.
BUT there are not "tens" of his quality levels of players available in the January window. That is exactly why we should sell him now.
In summer he is "one in a hundred", right now there is PEH, Phillips ... and that is all I can remember now, who clubs are willing to offload. While there is large number of clubs unhappy with their current options / fighting to survive in top leagues who could use him.

So I stand by what I said - selling him right now could result in 18-25 mil EUR. If he goes in the summer, we get 15 mil EUR max.
I disagree bringing Kane into the discussion is irrelevant. I did it to highlight that there are factors that mean straight line depreciation is just a very rough starting point. Suppose that playing and being wanted in a team was irrelevant to a player, more players would just run down their contracts (Tanguy!) and then pocket a transfer fee for themselves.

But the fact that playing and being wanted is important - both economically for the player, and for their quality of life - cedes some power to the selling club. Which means, in general, a player with 12 months left on his contract will be worth more than 50% of the same player with 24 months left on his contract, and worth more than 67% of the same player with 18 months left on his contract.

But anyway, for a few £m depreciation in PEH between now and summer, we'd be mad to shift him given the squad depth vs injuries / suspensions - unless he really really wants to leave now.

No, you base it on mumbojumbo.

I don't care what Ange SAID, but I can see what he did. Which is deeming GLC not worthy for 77% of the time.

What is more important, what people say or what actually happens in world?

Starter costs 50-60 mil. GLC is bench player who is used as last resort as numbers show. So you cant compare value of starter to last resort option.

Or well actually even starters do not cost that much - Madders AND Bentancur combined cost was 65 mil, so now stating that player who is overlooked 77% of all the minutes costs same is definition of utter bullshit.

Again - purely actual facts. Opposed to your "oh, but in last game he was good".

Bro that's a made up stat completely ignoring any context at all.

This is fucking boring now.
