Transfers January Transfer Thread 2024

Latest Spurs videos from Sky Sports

Delays the first installment.

"Ok, we'll pay you what you want, but you'll have to wait a year to get it"

5m now is worth more now than it is in 12 months time... As is the next 5m the year after... and on.
We usually pay a large loan fee so that's not it. I think its probably moving the fee from this accounting period to the next.

The tapping up 'nonsense' came from the back of your flaky evidence about Liverpool getting that particular Van Dijk deal done before the Jan TW opened, now you're asking for a source that details what actually happened in said transfer...

How can you bring up an argument to prove yourself right and don't even know the full details what actually happened? 🤦‍♀️
I brought up a point, someone countered that with from what I could tell was conjecture and I asked him if what he’s saying actually happened or if he’s just surmising, what is the issue with that?

I’m well aware that Southampton accused Liverpool of tapping up the player.
I’m also aware that Liverpool said they “ended” their interest in the player and there were no more talks that summer. That would in turn mean that they went back in for the player and subsequently got the deal wrapped up at the START of the January window.

I’m seeing a load of claims of “oh Southampton agreed they’d sell him if Liverpool paid 20 million more” etc etc etc it’s all irrelevant spinning deflecting bullshit.

The salient point here is Liverpool signed a world class CB at the beginning of the January transfer window, and he proved to be a game changer helping them to win every trophy. The fact you can’t see this says everything about your agenda.

As much as his agent is working to link him to all manner of big continental names, the only clubs who will be interested in PEH are the likes of Fulham. We may well end up with him seeing out his contract if he thinks a move like that is below him.

And regarding Van Dijk, that early January transfer was in fact a 5 month late summer signing.

Would love to see how many people would be praising us for getting a player 'in early' in those circumstances

We do? Never seen mention of an additional loan fee in the case of 'Ob-to-buy'; only with 'Option-to-buy'.

Still, to some degree you prob. just answered your own question.

Nah see you're not gonna do that...Liverpool signing Van Dijk for the start of the Jan TW wasn't the reason why they went onto be dominant, they would have won regardless so stop being disingenuous - you can't argue in bad faith and try to make out I have an agenda you sneaky little man :sonpoint:

You seem to have forgotten what this debate was about or not actually followed it so let me remind you, I asked for an another example or other examples of clubs who have got transfers in before the TW opened. You've given this example but as already been explained this transfer has been an anomaly, I mean you are actually right but there's a load of context that needed to be added for this transfer which has now been covered.

So you are arguing the exception, the reason why it's the exception is because it's a unique situation where they should have got this transfer wrapped up in the Summer, the fact that you've spent all day trying to argue the exception proves my point.

Let me ask you this, do you think we are in a unique situation or any situation where we absolutely have to get Dragusin over the line before the Jan window opened and if so why?

It isn’t hard to see why Juve would be looking at him. He fits into their system well, Allegri prefers workhorses like him in his midfield.

Same with Atletico in the summer.

The fact you can’t see this says everything about your agenda.
...and the fact that you can't recognise the huge difference between that situation and a 'normal' transfer says everything about yours.

Anyone with any sense / dignity would have said several hours ago "you know what, you're right, it's not the best example is it, here's a better one" (given that you presumably have thousands of day 1 transfers to cite... ;)).

It's so typical of this place - there are so few people who can say in any debate "hmmm that's a fair point actually, it doesn't change my underlying thrust but it does compromise the precise point i just made, so let me retract it and make a better point". People would get so much more credibility if they did that more often. :(

:ange-bored2:
Listen Dan mate, I'm down to the barebones here. I've got facking Emerson Royal and Gentle Ben playing CB in the Premier League in 2024 and you're asking me for top 4. Lets have a CB in for United eh boss?

:levystare:
Sure pal. I've set the wheels in motion. Don Fab has been greasing all manner of palms the last couple of months. Should have him in for 3rd Jan. Big Romanian lad, Dragusin.
:ange-arms:
Fucking magic mate. Never heard of him but sounds lovely.

:ange-pray:
Hi mate, hope you're well. It's Jan 5th tomorrow, we've got Burnley and then United next week as you know. Looks like I'm gonna have to start dumb and dumber at CB again. Heard a couple of days ago we had player terms and fee agreed for Drago. But now some bollocks about a loan and lowering the price?
:levylol:
You mean... you've never heard of the LEVY DANCE?
:ange-hands-head:

Who is this lad at CB for Everton? His passing is very good and if I remember, he had a good shot on him too
Do you mean Jarrad Branthwaite? If so, yes he does look good, particularly his decision-making, but he's 21 and English, and given how well thought of he seems to be, I doubt they'd let him leave for much less than £60m, maybe more. (Just my own view, I don't have any source for that, so others might have different / more informed thoughts).

EDIT: £75m according to some Reddit thread a few weeks ago apparently. Doubt it's a credible source, but sounds like the sort of money you'd expect for such a player.

You are now claiming, with a straight face, that Liverpool would have been as successful without Van Dijk?

Or just that getting him early didn’t make a difference?
I don’t remember their circumstances that season. Maybe he helped them win important points and an FA Cup tie that year? Did they win the FA Cup that year?

I think the point over the last billion pages today is that it wasn't "early"; it was essentially "late" as they ballsed the deal up in the previous summer.

17/18 season:

Must have done them some good in the second half of the season cos they were a Lovren clown show at the back in the first half of the season.

January

The Reds opened their 2018 on the first day of the year by traveling to Turf Moor to take on Burnley. Mane broke the deadlock in the 61st with a goal but Jóhann Berg Guðmundsson leveled the score in the 87th minute. The Reds, however, were able to get all three points off a Ragnar Klavan header in the 94th minute with a 1–2 final.[44] Following the triumph in the league, the Reds hosted Everton for the second time in under 30 days, this time in the third round of the 2017–18 FA Cup on 5 January. While Everton received the hotly contested penalty in the first meeting, Liverpool was the one to benefit from a controversial penalty call as Mason Holgate brought Lallana down inside the box and Milner converted the penalty in the 35th minute. The derby match also featured Holgate and Firmino getting into a verbal altercation shortly before the end of the first half following a push from Holgate to Firmino that sent the latter over the advertising boards. In the 67th minute, Gylfi Sigurðsson scored on a counterattack to equalize the game at one. In the 84th minute, however, van Dijk in his Liverpool debut scored off a corner kick making it 2–1 and marking a second game in a row with a late headed goal from a defender to win the game.[45] The day after, on 6 January, the club made the official announcement that (subject to a medical and personal terms) Coutinho would be leaving for Barcelona on a deal that Paul Joyce of The Times reported could reach up to £142 million. Coutinho was subsequently announced by Barcelona that day.[46][47][48] On 14 January, Liverpool took on the undefeated Manchester City at Anfield in hopes of deal City their first loss in the league as well as a measure of revenge for the 0–5 loss the Reds were dealt in the reverse fixture. Liverpool started off strong with an Oxlade-Chamberlain goal in the ninth minute, but City scored an equalizer through in the 40th through a Leroy Sane effort. From the 59th to the 68th, Liverpool extended the lead to 4–1 through goals from Firmino, Mane, and Salah in a thrilling ten minutes of action. City got one back in the 84th from Bernardo Silva and another from İlkay Gündoğan in the 91st put it at 4–3, but the Reds held on and doled City their first loss of the league season.[49] The next game for the Reds was a 22 January meeting in South Wales against Swansea and recently placed manager Carlos Carvalhal. Alfie Mawson scored the lone goal of the match in the 40th minute and the bottom place Swans took all three from the Reds with a 1–0 defeat given to the visitors.[50] In the fourth round proper of the FA Cup, on 27 January, Liverpool took on West Brom. Firmino's chip in the fifth gave the early lead, but a four-minute double to Jay Rodriguez put West Brom up 1–2 in the 11th. Video assistant referee replay played a crucial first half role as it denied Craig Dawson a goal to make the game 1–3, then awarded a penalty to Liverpool, which was subsequently missed by Firmino. West Brom added a third with an own goal from Matip late in first half added time. Salah put the Reds within one in the 78th, but the 2–3 scoreline stood and the Reds were stunned at home by the second from bottom Baggies in the cup.[51] The final fixture of the month was on 30 January where the Reds visited John Smith's Stadium and Huddersfield Town. Emre Can's long range effort in the 26th put the Reds up 0–1 early, and Firmino added a second right before the break. Salah's 78th minute spot kick made it 0–3 and Liverpool finished January with a comfortable victory.[52]
