Bissouma?? Come on mate! I'd currently have Bentancur, Sarr and Gray ahead of him and I'd still like us to sign another 6. If we're still starting Bissouma next season then I'll be very dissapointed. He's totally inconsistent and unreliable. 1 good game for every 3 bad games. We can't persist with him
Happily would find a replacement for Bissmouma. As a 6, I’d rather play Bissouma there than any of those options, today. I could see my feelings changing as Sarr and Gray develop, but I don’t think either is ready yet.

Our system asks the 6 to push forward while also pushing everyone else forward. We’d need a Bissouma on the ball, Sarr engine, and VDV speed to have a 6 that works in today’s system. I’d rather we actually sat the 6 deeper and told them to sit rather than push forward, more than getting a new 6.

I guess my bigger point here is that no new 6 is going to work here. We need to adjust tactically and then make a determination if Bissouma is right or wrong.

What kind of injury has you for 72 days but still able to go on loan to Napoli?

Pretty sure he made an appearance of the bench during those 72days as well

From what I’ve seen in past Ange teams, the 6 falls back or to the side to fill in the space left by the one defender going forward. So, Porro flies forward, the 6 becomes the right back, etc.

He’d generally not have to go forward much, as the other two central mids are doing that in between the wingers and CF.

I believe Ange thinks Gray is the guy as he speaks so highly of him. But, for the reasons we all know, we’ve been playing him elsewhere. Nice he’s getting experience in those roles, I suppose, but I’m very keen to see him as a central DM sooner rather than later.

There is a thread on he subject, but in short Spurs are 2nd highest goal scorers in PL with Johnson (who plays more of a support striker role than a right winger) being one of our leading scorers so the idea of replacing him with a 'proper' winger is nuts. Sure he can;' play all of Spurs fixtures (no player can - the schedule requires all players to get some rotation and rest) , so we need a 2nd player who currently is Kukusevski and was planned to also be Odobert before his injury, so we can mix and match different skills in the forward line.

The Johnson hate is wild.

Only 23 years-old (turns 24 in May), pace, and contributes at the rate of our more experienced players.

Leaves us with Romero, VDV, Drag, an ageing Ben and a youngster. If this season has taught us anything, it’s that 2 or 3 will be out at any one time. Means we need 6, so we should be signing 1 or 2 at least.
Six?! that's an insane amount.

What if we had no europe and VDV and Romero went injury free? two of them would never play and the other two would be very sparse mins wise.

no club has 6 cbs surely?

It’s a lot aye. But we had a right back and a central midfielder in defence yesterday.

Ange’s system means a lot of strain on our defence. If we know anything from the last 18 months, it’s that. I’d say three per position is probably needed. Maybe get away with a VDV or a Davies who could cover two positions, but that would be a push.

I get you, I just don't think we'll stock pile on the basis of potential or future injuries.

Dragu was already kicking up last season about a lack of mins.

he did mention he would not have sanctioned Kane's departure if he felt he needed to win something last year or this in a recent interview

There is no way he had any choice in the matter so I really don't know why he is saying this. Kane refused to sign a new contract, Levy didn't want him to run down his contract any further, Bayern Munich s desire to buy him was ideal timing as it meant Kane could be sold abroad and not to a PL rival.

Aye, we’d only need six if we keep the manager. I should have said that.

We shouldn't need 6 with Ange. We need 4 that can properly rotate without losing anything tactically.

The whole rotation of our CBs and FBs made no sense at all to start the season. Spence and Gray both right-footed meant to rotate with Porro AND Udogie? Davies meant to rotate with VDV AND Udogie when he can't offer the same as either? Dragusin not really a stylistic cover for Romero or VDV but somehow our 3rd choice? and then he went and got a straight red to start the Europa League??

I dont think we should worry about players being unhappy about not getting enough minutes. If they are that unhappy they can instruct their agents to put in a transfer request and find a new club.

We know we’ll get injuries and suspensions. Perfect world is we have a couple of young players in the u21s that would be trusted to step up at times. Not convinced we would do that though.

Chavski have 6 CBs: Colwill, Disasi, Fofana, Badiashile, Tosin, and Veiga.

Woolwich have: Gabriel, Saliba, and Kiwior.

Additionally, Ben White, Calafiori, and Tomiyasu are CBs played as fullbacks in Arteta's defensive set-up.

Timber is also a FB/CB hybrid.

Shitty have: Dias, Gvardiol, Ake, Akanji, Stones.

Permanent transfer signings since we appointed Ange (i.e. permanent transfers since 1st July 2023):
  • Solanke £65m
  • Johnson £47m
  • Gray £40m
  • Van de Ven £42m
  • Maddison £40m
  • *Porro £35m
  • Odobert £25m
  • *Kulusevski £25m
  • Dragusin £21m
  • Vicario £17m
  • Kinsky £12.5m
  • Veliz £12m
  • Vuškovic £12m
  • Bergvall £8m
  • Yang £2m
  • Phillips £2m
---------------------------
TOTAL = £405.5m

* I am well aware both Porro (6 months) and Kulusevski (18 months) were on loan to us prior to making their transfers permanent on 1st July 2023, but they still count as signings in this period as that is when the contracts were signed, player registration was transferred to us, and the permanent fee payments and player amortisation commenced.

Of all those signings, I would say that only Johnson, Dragusin and Veliz are questionable (although it should be noted that Johnson is our top scorer in a high scoring team). Jury still out on Odobert (although I personally am a fan). Add permanent signings from the year before (Bentancur, Romero, Sarr, Udogie, Bissouma, Spence etc.) and I think it shows the club has invested significantly to rebuild the squad since the new stadium was fully operational after the Covid pandemic (following years of neglect it has to be said!).

If we keep progressing like this, adding a couple of first team upgrades and a couple of investments for the future each summer we will have an incredible squad for years to come. We're finally doing things properly (for the first time), with a clear strategy, specialist recruitment and scouting teams set up, and a clear plan on how to build the squad with the right profile of player. Players like Vuskovic, Bergvall and Gray will count as club trained when they hit 21. Next season both Gray and Bergvall will be bigger contributors to our first team, Vuskovic will be with us, to add to 2 or 3 key signings in the summer. I honestly feel the future is very bright, and the approach will be worth the short term pain we are experiencing now.
GREAT POST!!

And far more aligned with fans who aren’t trauma hounds online.

Maximum squad of players aged over 21 is 25 (including 3 GK's)

So if you want 3 players per position, that's 33 ........ just a few more than the club can actually have in their squad !
