Player João Palhinha

Latest Spurs videos from Sky Sports

I’d keep him assuming a reasonable deal could be done. Granted, he shouldn’t think he would be a mainstay of the team or in the regular starting 11 but I don’t think he would think that necessarily.

But let’s face it, even with promised improvements and squad additions (lol) there will be games where we’re going to be under the cosh or hanging on to a narrow lead and bringing Palhinha on for the last 30 mins or so could be ideal. Whatever some think, he is a very effective tackler, breaks up play and can pop up for the odd goal. That can galvanise team mates and get them to add some final hard yards to see a result out, as well as lift the fans get the crowd going. Having that available to us for a season or two is no bad thing IMO.

In support of gamesaboutglory , I present the following:

According to stats for this season, he's the second best tackler with 110 tackles behind James Garner with 120.
According to official premier league stats

This does not prove that he is the best tackler in the premier league . Fucking hell. Can’t be doing this anymore. I’ve a feeling that now we have stayed up, there are going to be some hilarious reasons and excuses to keep a lot more of those useless twats .

You're correct. It shows he's the SECOND best tackler. I don't think it negates gamesaboutglory and their point about being a good tackler. I'm sure you're not just splitting semantic hairs for the sake of it.

Also, I agree about getting rid of useless twats; however, Paulina is much further down the list than some.

Palhinha is a good tackler and scored a few key scrappy goals. He was useful in a relegation scrap.

Signing him for a decent fee when he’s 30 and will always be very limited would be an emotion based decision that I hope we’re past now.

If we’re spending on midfielders, I’d prefer it all to go on players very comfortable on the ball, not Palhinha.

Some people don't like him cos he's not the silkiest of players on the ball. The irony is we don't have anyone who is! at least this guy has something in the game he is genuinely elite at!

It's not like hes a donkey compared to the rest of our midfielders lol, none of them are exactly midfield maestros are they lol.

We own the rest of our midfielders. We don’t own this one. We don’t actively need to pay for him. Our other midfielders are terrible.

He is notably clunky. We want to raise our level (especially technical level) and have limited funds.

Palhinha is good in a scrap. He’s not good for what we want to become. His ball progression, press resistance, mobility etc are all below average, on the eye and in numbers.

We want to get back to being a team that can press high, probe, keep the ball. At best in a team like that Palhinha is a squad option. We don’t have the money + wages to spend on him as a squad option.

He's an upgrade on all our midfielders, and he's already settled into the club. He’s also a model senior pro, he's not some little prick.

You ship out the shit, you don't keep the shit and let players like Palhinha go. That’s not how you build a better team and squad. You're not just buying him for what he offers on the pitch, you're buying him for what he offers off it too. This club has a serious lack of actual men that get it.

The best comparison I could make is he’s a bit of an Allardyce on the pitch.

You want to fight and scrap and stay in the league by the skin of your teeth? He’s your guy.

If you want more, then you have to go in another direction.

Could we find a buyer for Sarr? Would he be willing to leave?

There are potentially other options, but in the end I just think we need to be unemotional about this.
I’d like to think so. I could see him in Italy somewhere.

I don’t mind Palinha staying. I take everyone’s points on board, but in a functioning side he would make an excellent sub. And I come back to the fact he can actually slot in at CB too.

I'd keep him over Sarr and Bissouma - not least because he was very capable at playing out of position when needed and has more passion for the club that comfortable 10-15 players we already have under contract.

You don't throw that away so easily
