Management Johan Lange - Technical Director

Latest Spurs videos from Sky Sports

Spoke to my Villa mate last night. He said to me they wouldn't be where they are today if Lange had stayed, and that the "it's Lange who signed x, y and z" is a myth, that Lange was just a pen pusher stuck behind his data screen while others actually did the real work and actually ignored most the names he'd bring forward. Villa fans are buzzing he's gone and laughing at us for thinking we'd signed the new scouting superstar.

It does seem like their biggest successes over his period were players that were more likely down to existing UK connections (Dean Smith knew Watkins, Cash from the Championship, for example) rather than down to Lange.

And there were quite a few shockers over his time there: Danny Ings, Coutinho, Dendonker, Bailey, Diego Carlos, Bertand Traore - a lot of middling/poor players that cost decent money and are no longer at the club.

The one really impressive signing that looks like a Lange one is Duran who they bought from the MLS and made a killing on to Saudi. Kinda reminiscent of the Bergvall deal for us.

My sense is he's probably an alright data guy and might pick out the odd decent youngster, but he's rubbish at actually building a functional team. He dropped a colossal bollock the summer before last - basically the only window where he was the main man at Spurs - and needs to be replaced. I'm sure Levy hamstrung him financially, but it was, quite simply, poor squadbuilding.

Bringing in three teenagers from Burnley, Leeds and the Danish league and Dom Solanke to replace like 6 experienced players in a season where we had Europe was fucking absurd on reflection. Putting that much expectation on Gray, Bergvall and Odobert was just madness and it's a big part of why we did so poorly last year.

Just heard on talksport Adrien Durham seems to think hes been well in formed that Paratici is over seeing this window then will depart after.

How the fuck does that make any sense.

This is it really. It’s not hard to find talented players these days. You’ve got to data, you’ve got unlimited video of almost every match played in the world and at a club like us you’ve got decent resources to get scouts out to watch people in the flesh. It would be almost harder not to identify good young players.

The hard bit is building a team that functions together as greater than the sum of their parts. This takes knowledge, feel, experience. It’s almost like alchemy. You need to mesh skills together. Find players that could form partnerships with ones you have. You need the right personalities to make it all come together.

Lange and Paratici have never ever shown any capacity for this. In fact Paratici destroyed the work of one of the master team builders of European football in Beppe Marotta when he left Juve to join Inter. Juve just got worse and worse when he took charge. I can’t see that Lange has ever really put together a highly competitive team in his career.

It’s absolutely ludicrous that the owners conducted a review of the club and still put these bozos in charge.

Yeah absolutely. We all got caught up in Paratici's mystique and contact book but if you actually look at who we signed it's quite the mess of squad building. And Lange has done no better.

Ironically, the best period might've actually been once Paratici got charged and Gabbanini took over. It's not perfect window by any means, but Vdv, Maddison, Vicario and Johnson at least felt coherent in a squad-building sense. Most of our other windows are a lot...weirder.

Not all of us.

I never wanted the dodgy looking cunt, looks like the sort of geezer you would'nt want to buy a used car from.

Think you’ll find Coutinho was down to Gerrard. Still a nightmare buy though.
