Player Mathys Tel

Latest Spurs videos from Sky Sports

I know Tel can play across the front 3, but prefers to play as a LWF who cuts inside. We have Son, Odobert and Moore who also are best in that position. Do we think Tel plays CF in Solanke’s absence, or will be the RWF we’ve been crying out for?

I expect he'll mainly play centre forward until Solanke is back - Richarlison can't really complete 90 mins and definitely can't play twice in 4 days

Agree Tel more likely to play as a ST immediately, but Odobert and Tel could transform our wings. Both very quick with fast feet. Quite excited.

Anyone else underwhelmed by this. The lad clearly didn't want to sign for us, and we are just developing someone elses player. PL season is dead would have rather seen the minutes he will get given to Moore, Scarlett and Co.

If anything, I am overwhelmed by this.

I have watched SOME Bayern games (mostly last season) and I've always felt that Tel has something special about him.
I mean I cannot stress enough how high his ceiling is. Right now he is just 19 yo kid, who has got 83 appearances for Bayern.
Within this time he has also scored and assisted in Champions League.

Overall he has contributed 16 goals and 7 assists (23 goal contributions) within 2464 minutes. So G/A for every 107 minutes. AS 19 YO (!).

All of it is beyond impressive.
It might sound bit over the top but I've got a feeling he has potential to be be top 3 forward in the world in 3-4 years time.
Just go and re-watch the video where he played against us. Look at his first touch for example. It is better than any of our current forwards (incl Son) has. Also he seems to be able to release quick pass/cross in fashion where every defender is not anticipating it already for 3 seconds.

"clearly didn't want to sign for us" - well first of all - as was said, being a foreign player with no emotional attachment to Spurs, it does make sense preferring to go globally better-known side. Specially given we are in 14th place with shocking form...
And 2nd of all - he in the end did decide to come. I doubt we forced or threatened him to do so.

I saw him a few years ago and thought the same. Could be very special. Fleet of foot and mind.

Well done to Ange for getting this deal going again. He gets stick and rightly so but he’s done his job well with this one. Tel is a top talent and instantly upgrades us. Hopefully we can kick on and he falls in love with the club and wants to be here long term.

Ok, did a little rudimentary back-of-a-fag-packet research, so take with a pinch of salt:

That said, liimited sample size. Overall am more pro the signing than I was half an hour ago because it's clear he's got real ability. But to me he looks very raw and a 60m investment on a player who Bayern bought for 20m 2 years ago and who hasn't set the world alight since would make me incredibly nervous. For 70 you could buy Kvara who is the proven article. This guy's fee seems massively overinflated to me and im praying it's just a loan for now.

It was a nice post and I agree with 99% said.
Though one thing that to me has stood out about him is his close control. How he just "kills" the ball so quickly and is ready to move on.
We plonder around too much. Too many touches, holding on to ball for too long, etc. If we instruct him to move the ball on quickly, it creates lot more stress to opposite defenders. Also he seems to be able to squeeze in good crosses into GK box. Something that in this season only Porro and Moore have been able to do for us. So when Solanke is back, I think he will benefit from it.

But only thing I don't agree with is the part in bold.
"hasn't set world alight" - meaning as 19 yo kid scoring or assisting with 107 minutes on the pitch? And it also includes scoring and assisting in CL.
I mean we have to consider the context for a second - he has been fighting for playing time with likes of Harry Kane, Jamal Musiala, Thomas Müller, Leroy Sane, Serge Gnabry, Kingsley Coman, Michael Olise. All of them vastly more experienced than him.
And this "for 70 mil you could buy Kvara who is the proven article" - so very untrue. First of all - you could not. Tottenham Hotspur cannot. PSG can, and few others as well. I am fully sure we could have offered 90 mil for him, he would have picked PSG offer of 70 mil. I mean guaranteed Ligue 1 win vs fighting for 15th place? Then 2nd MASSIVE aspect is salary. Offering both 5 year contract - I am pretty sure that for upcoming talent like Tel, this is 100 kpw we are talking about. So 5,2 mil per season. 26 mil across contract. With Kvara we are talking at least 3x that. So 72 mil for the same period. So - in short - not really attainable, and overall twice as expensive, not "for same".
Not to mention that proven Kvara is 24 in few days (4,5 years older)... and in all fairness has been poorer this season compared to last. Which was in turn poorer than season before.

To me this deal reminds much more Alexander Isak one.
Sure, Isak was ~23 and bit more proven. But for striker his 45 goals on top level is not at all more impressive than having 16 goals at 19yo.
In fact as 20 yo, Isak had just recently been sold from Dortmund to Sociedad for 15 mil. Having only scored 1 and assisted 1 within just 281 minutes he earned for Dortmund. So in that sense Tel is way further in his developement than Isak was at this point too.
3 years later Newcastle swooped in with 70 mil transfer.
2,5 more years later, this 70 mil sounds like an absolute bargain.

Why has this "Bayern owe us still" become a thing? Yes, from a cash held basis that is true but it is accounted for in a balance sheet. You can't just wipe it off. Being a director for two years this sort of shit has kept me up at night.
These guys are literally Sports Entertainment - they know as much as we do.

Robbie is always full of shit just look at all the bollocks he was spouting during the transfer window - I don't mind people like Expressions cos he's always said he's just a fan but some of the rest of these guys think they're *connected* or *in the know* they're not they're just there for us to laugh at. Entertainers only mah dude.

I've met Abbi & Expressions a few really nice people but they're just people who are fans nothing more.

‘Tel has so much unrealised potential’

Analysis by Seb Stafford-Bloor a few days before Spurs signed Tel

"Tel is a mighty talent. His progress may have stalled this season — he has played just 458 minutes of football for Bayern Munich — but he could grow into one of the most dangerous inside forwards in Europe.

He’s a skilful and dynamic goalscorer who still has some rough edges, but has as much unrealised potential as any player in the Bundesliga.

He needs to play if he is to evolve. And he really needs to learn his best position. Tel has appeared either on the left for Bayern, or otherwise through the middle, as a centre-forward.

With Harry Kane, the most expensive player in German football history, blocking his path, there’s been little chance to explore whether Tel has a future as an outright No 9 — but clubs elsewhere may have fun finding out."

I know Tel can play across the front 3, but prefers to play as a LWF who cuts inside. We have Son, Odobert and Moore who also are best in that position. Do we think Tel plays CF in Solanke’s absence, or will be the RWF we’ve been crying out for?
We won’t have to run Solanke into the ground . Who knows if we can win a cup and get back into Europe , (still a big ask) , but if we can plenty of mins at CF next season . We obviously need him to do well enough to exercise the option first ,

All the forum talk means zilch.

Let's see if the guy is as good as reports suggest.

To secure an option to buy on a much sought after player is absolute proof that as sh!t as this season has been, that we remain but a period of success away from being a huge presence in the football world.

Our model seems a bit clearer, if continually frustrating and I also think, a strategy designed to get the future manager who develops starlets.

Does have hints of Henry at Juve, struggling to make his name out LW. Maybe not the Pace of Henry, but better finishing.

Imagine your a right back and you spend the first hour or so of the game defending against someone like Tel , then for the last half hour on comes a fresh Sonny, Odobert or Mickey Moore ! Would be nice to get in a situation where we have Pace and players that scare defenders on the left and right side of our attack!
