Player Messi - The greatest player ever?

Latest Spurs videos from Sky Sports

Probably the most all round gifted, runs the midfield as well as scores goals like pele and Iniesta all in one player. So maybe yes, certainly think he is far better all round than Ronaldo.

Watched a lot of pele, great player, amazing finisher but the best player, not for me. Maradonna is closest to Messi but ruined his career to some degree, Zindane and Cruyff were amazing to watch but for all round consistent brilliance Messi is the best I have ever seen.
Maradona will always have a claim just because he dominated a WC Finals in a way no other player has. His impact at Napoli also speaks volumes as to what a difference he made. Bigger personality than Messi. Messi's longevity and numbers are ridiculous though. And his WC performance last year was superb.

100%.

I always feel you can beat a Messi team, but Maradonna was just unstoppable, and in an era when you could virtually rugby tackle players and not get a red card. Very strong. Before scoring THAT goal v England he just ran through all the arms trying to foul-stop him. He won that WC pretty much single handed.

Would have made a great scrum half for Argentina. Fast, skillful, very strong, and with a massive boot on him. Could have been the GOAT in rugby too imo.

Messi is/has been unreal. To me Maradona felt like watching the best version of Paul Gascoigne and more. Just an astonishing footballer.

And yet the Brazilian Ronaldo remains the player I liked watching more than any other.

I may have answered this way down the thread but no, Messi isn’t the greatest. Personally, the award has to go to Maradona. What he did with Napoli and Argentina was astonishing. Not the most influential football person of all time (Cruyff by miles) but as a player no one touches Maradona. The goals England and Belgium alone in 1986 but getting a shit team to the final in 1990 - the run and pass for Cannigia against Brazil destroyed a nation, and let alone all the club stuff he achieved. Genius is always flawed, and that’s what makes the attraction greater.

If football started with the EPL then yes, he probably is.

Since it didn't, no he's not.

He's better than Ronaldo, certainly more naturally gifted. But you also have to respect how hard Ronaldo has worked to improve himself. He was a talented fairy at United with little end product for the first couple of years. His numbers are now obviously staggering.

That said, I enjoyed watching Ronaldinho more than both of them.

Ronaldinho was very much the most fun footballer I have ever seen. Messi is the most complete certainly in my lifetime, no weakness.

Can't argue with the brilliance of Maradona. Just unbelievable.

I do love Messi though. Way more consistent than Maradona, but then again so was Ronaldo and the latter is literally not even the best footballer named Ronaldo.

Impossible to doubt Messi’s brilliance but, and the but is huge, do it for a lesser light to really cement your greatness. And then do it again. But they were different times and styles.

Maradona and of course Pele played on muddy shitholes at times. You can watch back footage of hacks trying to break their legs repeatedly. Christiano Ronaldo wouldn't train, let alone even walk on any of those over used paddocks. (His mascara would run)
When Maradona joined Napoli (from Barcelona) they were at the bottom if i recall correctly. Plenty of responsibility on his shoulders.
