His positioning for a start, he's allows Isak to just spin away from him, laterally, he then reacts slowly, seems to be trying to play him offside, when Isak's in his own half. And finally, when he's just about caught him, I don't get why he doesn't try to make a sliding block - the one time in the game you wanted him to slide.

Because he had already had a yellow and didn't want to risk red. He is young, he will learn.

Tough crowd.
He slipped over twice. The third goal he was pathetic.
But he was on a totally undeserved yellow.
The referee massively influenced VDV's performance and the ultimate outcome of the Newcastle game.

Considering how ordinarily keen he is to slide and the fact that he never truly caught up with him; benefit of the doubt says Mickey knew he couldn't put the challenge in without high risk of a pen.

Jamie Redknapp has claimed that Tottenham defender Micky van de Ven is as good as Woolwich centre-back William Saliba.
Redknapp also expressed his belief that van de Ven, who was on the scoresheet in Tottenham's 3-1 win against Nottingham Forest, can emulate Liverpool star Virgil van Dijk.
Van de Ven has enjoyed a hugely impressive first season at Tottenham since his move from Wolfsburg last summer and has returned to produce some excellent performances after struggling with a hamstring injury earlier in the campaign.

Former Tottenham player Redknapp has been hugely impressed by van de Ven's progress and claimed that the 22-year-old is a better player than his compatriot van Dijk was at his age.
Speaking on Sky Sports, Redknapp said: 'Woolwich fans will look at Saliba who is a great young defender as well, but I think this guy's equally as good. He's got everything going for him.

'You see the difference when Spurs lost him when he had his hamstring injuries. I think if he stays injury free there's no reason why he can't almost emulate what Virgil van Dijk's done.

'When Virgil was a similar age, Virgil wasn't producing the performances that he is right now. He's only going to get better, as long as he doesn't get too many injuries along the way because that can affect with the hamstrings and the speed that he's got, but he's a top player, he really is.'

When van Dijk was 22, he was in the early stages of his spell at Celtic, which subsequently led to moves to Southampton and then Liverpool.

Saliba, meanwhile, has been outstanding this season for an Woolwich side that are currently top of the Premier League.

The Frenchman has forged a resilient partnership with Gabriel at the heart of the Woolwich defence.

Van de Ven has also frequently stood out for Tottenham and will hope to push on even further.

Having featured twice for the Netherlands at senior level so far, van de Ven will now be looking to establish himself as a key player for his country.

With regards to domestic matters, Tottenham are in fourth place in the Premier League as they look to secure Champions League qualification.

Ange Postecoglou's side, who have taken 60 points from their 31 games so far, face Newcastle away on Saturday in their next game.

I don't get to go to many games, usually one or two a season, and I went yesterday. I can't recall experiencing it at a game prior to this, I mean we've all experienced it on the TV, but it's not the same....obviously I'm talking about VAR. I'm not going to say whether or not Micky's goal was rightly or wrongly ruled out, I suppose when you're looking at the microscopic detail down to the sliver of a pixel, it's 'binary'; it isn't about that.

Like everyone, I went absolutely berserk when that goal went in, seeing Micky wheel away with that celebration etc, hugging everyone around you, joy and pent up frustration all being let out in one of the few places where it's entirely acceptable to do so. That's what watching football is all about. The main thing that supporters go to games for, to have those moment's of ecstasy and elation, has been effectively nullified by VAR. You just can't celebrate anymore. It completely drained me for the rest of the first half yesterday. Those of you that go week in week out will have experienced this before of course and perhaps know when something like that is coming, but when you let go like that to then have it snatched away (from someone's backside being a mm offside no less), it's pretty soul destroying.

I'm preaching to the converted here and it's nothing new I know, just wanted to get that off my chest! VAR just has to be scrapped. As for the game as a whole, it was a bit nothingy to be honest, a bit of a strange one. Five minutes longer and I think we would've got something out of it, and of course our complete inability to defend set pieces continues.

Thew irony is that had it not been for VAR then we wouldn't have got the penalty, but I definitely hear you, it's a shame that moments like that get ruined.

You're right there is the other side of it. When it goes for you you're not going to turn it down. That being said, I'd far rather have the level playing field of everyone not having VAR than having it. Incidentally the pen yesterday, the referee is a disgrace for not giving that. It couldn't be much more blatant, and he was directly in front of it.

Yeah I agree, good post.

I was the same with a couple of my mates, the celebrations were brilliant. The VAR decision though kills all atmosphere and if anything it gives the opposition a boost, hence them scoring their goal straight after.

Michael Oliver didn't want to give that.

Totally agree. The disallowed goal took all the energy out me too. It just makes the game shit. VAR is a passion and emotion killer and I don’t care that we got a penalty for it because I want it to get to fuck.
