The thing is, that you also want a manager that adapts to the opponent. Was a criticism of Poch that we always played the same way, regardless of who the opponent was. That we should be more defensive and rely on the counter playing the bigger teams and take our game to the lesser opposition.
I do not see the fact that Kompany took the game to City as a plus, because it was not pragmatic. And it's not like he wanted to bin the cup, because his team are in a promotion fight. They're as good as promoted and he could afford to go deeper into the the competition. Unless he was trying to impress the City management, the way Burnley approached the game was suicidal.
Yes, we all want a manger that sets the team up to play expansive football, but if his record against the rest of the top 6 is 0-10 with 30 goals conceded, there will be grumbling. We want expansive football when it's appropriate and we want results-based football when that's what the situation dictates.
Most elite manager or modern managers play mostly one way, Pep can switch formation but the style and the desire to be on the front foot as well as never take counter attack opportunities/be direct is the same. Klopp season after season is the same system/style but it works or at least works with the right players.
Poch changed formation quite a lot from 4231 to 352 to diamond. He still tried his best to play to his methods so in that respect he isn’t different from Klopp, Pep, Arteta.
The reason why it works for other clubs and not ours is scouting/recruitment. Most elite managers have a plan A that they try and perfect and over time build and buy the players to fit just like Arteta has done.
Modern football has gone down the route of perfectionists who have the one vision and want that implemented in full. The more pragmatic managers like say Harry Redknapp who may switch from playing possession football to counter attack football don’t seem to be the ones winning titles. The perfectionist brand seems or at least appears to have a higher ceiling.
I mean yeh we could get a more flexible pragmatic manager but the ceiling on that brand of football appears to be lower.
