Presuming we will not be in the champs league - surely that rules out the calibre of Nagelsmen, Zidane and Enrique?
Poch is a wild card - why would he come back to deal with a messy old unbalanced squad.
I think the kompany rumours might have legs as he would get a bit of a pass initially from fans and the press - he’s a popular guy and a new manager. He is used to working with (respectfully)players at a lower level and getting them to perform, but would command respect of higher level players due to his achievements.

Agreed at the moment we are being boosted by having two or three top quality players. Our defence and midfield are still a complete mess. The fact we have only signed one acceptable centre back in the last 8 years is insane.
Not sure I agree on the midfield bit. In recent years the systems / formations haven't helped our midfielders, but in the right system Bentancur, Biss, Skipp, PEH all have a very useful mix of attributes to be really useful for us in different ways and in different games, allowing really good options when all fit and firing (which I realise hasn't happened yet). Admittedly that still leaves us without a true central creator, but that's just one role to fill (albeit it a tricky and probably very expensive one - many thought N'Dombele and/or Lo Celso would be it, and the club parted with big sums for them, but both were ultimately total failures for us).

Totally agree on the defence, and surely that will be rectified at least to some extent this summer. Would be great to see 2 new high-quality faces there, but expect it will be just one. Will be extremely disappointed if we don't sign anyone first-choice there...

I agree with your first part. But we’ve been saying ‘let’s see’ for four seasons and we look like we did in the late naughties but are playing less entertaining football. My eyes are not telling me we are riding the crest of an upward curve.
At this point, no we're not. But we're not in free-fall either. If being 5th or 6th is bottoming out, that's not a bad place to be. Let's see if the internal reorganization gets us to push on. And the type of manager we get will also tell us if we are going in the right direction.

This keeps on being said but let’s wait and see. If they don’t win the league this season after being 11 points clear and 8 points clear on two separate occasions then he hasn’t really proved anything to me. Especially if next year they then fade away to fighting it out for fourth again with us. I think people are getting ahead of themselves, he’s been massively backed in the transfer market. It isn’t like he’s improved players he’s just bought and bought and bought.

If we can get Nagelsmann we should.
I think it's a bit harsh to say he hasn't improved players. Xhaka has excelled in a new role, White has got better, Saka is phenomenal and Martinelli has got better. I hate seeing it, and that's out of dislike for them as much as it is jealousy.

They finished 7th, 8th and then threw away 4th spot. Most fans would be calling for the sack, especially our fans.. But sometimes you need to accept it and allow time.

Zidane isn’t an option for the premier league as he speaks no English. Enrique will only go where he calls the shots so we can rule him out at us. Nagelsmann is more likely than those two but there’s other jobs out there or will be out there in the summer that will interest him more.
The more I think about it someone like Kompany could be a master stroke. He’s young, been successful in a short period of time in the toughest league to get out of. He’s transformed the playing style from one extreme to the other. He’s also a big character who’ll take no shit off anyone. He will deal with big egos and he’ll be hungry. I think there’s an awful lot of positives with Kompany.
And maybe he could look out his boots again🤣

We've got to talk about something though.

We once had a 2,000+ page discussion on who we might sign in the summer transfer window
.....and signed nobody 😧
So there is a chance we might set a new record of not having a manager , I could live with that . I want to play with a rush goalie as well

We have tried big names and project managers , let’s go full jumpers for goalposts and have some fun. Entertainment is all I crave next season , the ambition does not really go beyond that , play with style win, lose or draw

Narrative behind Arteta and Woolwich is always abit muddled.

You only have to check since Arteta took over and compare them to ours and see there really hasn't been much in it and mostly going down to the final game or so.

19/20 - 3 points behind us
20/21 - 1 point behind us
21/22 - 2 points behind us

And now this year, they find themselves 20 points clear of us.

Hes been just what they needed. Their Pochettino really. Got rid of the deadwood and big egos, promoted youth and got them playing good fearless football all whilst taking advantage of a year where most of the top teams have struggled.

Man City, Woolwich, Brighton they are different in money/size but they all have one thing in common, a coherent plan. Brighton apparently have every manager/player an alternative to bring in in case they leave, they can do this becuase they know exactly how they want to play this maximise their scouting/recruitment.

We in comparison are a mess, no style to build around. We had it with Poch then threw it away, we could have built around him. The new CFO if he is given proper power has to fix this. If Kompany or Slot is the new man then we buy for Pepball, if we bring Poch back then we need to follow that style going forward with or without that manager.

Woolwich going through a currently golden age in youth development will help them ride over the next few years too.

There should be no doubts.

And people are telling me that squad wasn't capable of winning a trophy within that time?

Didn't hinder my enjoyment one bit however.

We just where very fucking unlucky. Worst thing was Chelsea getting no European football with one game a week specialist Conte and peak Hazard and Kante. Even if Chavs had gotten in Europa League convinced we would have won the title.

Doesn't help when we're going out to second rate Woolwich at home in the league cup and losing to Palace at home in the FA Cup. And not taking Europe seriously both years.

We were unlucky and too focused on the league (and later the CL) during those peak Poch years.

I 100% believe that you could have combined a top four finish with a strong cup run to win a domestic cup during those years.
