Things like this should kill the idea that you have to exclusively spend big to buy well.

Scouting is just as much if not more important. Scout well and you can buy good players relatively cheap.

There's a reason that both our most recent sporting directors have been open about needing to modernise our scouting department. And that we are recruiting a lot of data staff and scouts.
 
Good on the bloke and for now it's working fir him.

Fcuk knows what we look for in players or the managers we employ, but there is no doubt different pressures and perceptions make a huge difference.

Not reading too much into it but it is incredible how we seem to get it wrong so often, which seems less about expenditure and more about incompetence.

We have to change the basis on which we sign players and which managers we covet..... maybe.

It's largely because our expectations are quite significant as a fan base, but we don't have the means to support them (combined with the length of time between success). It creates a unique pressure cooker environment that makes it that much harder for players/coaches to thrive. United have been experiencing similar, albeit their situation has different variables - ie they do have the means, but chronic backroom ineptitude and their position in the media has created it's own kind of nonsense

Also player churn is important as well. Not every player you sign is going to be a success. Look at Brighton they sign a lot of players and then move on the ones that do not work. Even Forest are in that position. We tend to spend too much on players for this to be a viable option.

Very much so. For us, sadly it depends on lighting in a bottle recruitment and a manager that combines charisma, playing style and results (or a change of ownership, obviously). No easy feat. You could argue Ange has two of those qualities, but is lacking in the third (results can also be interpreted as top tier coaching ability).

Poch had all 3, plus Kane and some of the best transfer business we've done around the time he came in. That's how lucky we might have to be again to really compete. Which is a tad depressing
 
Nuno was dealt a poison chalice at Spurs. Harry Kane wanted out that Summer and took no part in pre season. We didn't really back him either and just let him take over a team with an out of form Dele Ali, Ndombele, Lo Celso, etc. In hindsight it was a mess!

We won our 3 opening games 1-0 and were top of the table so it was a good start, but the football was not attacking or good. I think we conceded 25 shots in our 1-0 win away to Wolves. Once the results went against us (3-0 defeat to Palace) then fans turned quickly. He was then under pressure to play more attacking football and we went to Woolwich with Ndombele and Dele Ali in midfield and we got ripped apart in that game. Hojbjerg was left exposed as the lone 6 and it was a tactical disaster. He was done after that really. The 3-0 defeat at home to United was the end of him. He had no credit in the bank and fans wanted him gone from an early stage.

I don't think he was the right fit for us at the time but what I always admired about Nuno is how humble he is. He never came out disrespecting the club unlike Mourinho or Conte. He's gone to Forrest now and allowed his actions to speak louder than words. I'm happy for him and I'd like to see Forrest make the top 4 this season!
