Conducting research for a book on football songs and need to delve into the memory banks of people who were around in '81...
Ossie's going to Wembley
His knees have gone all trembly
Come on you Spurs
Come on you Spurs
This is written to the tune of 'I Came, I Saw, I Conga'd' (typically just known as the conga) from decades previously. The standard cup-related chant is 'We're on our way to Wembley / We're on our way to Wembley / na na na na / na na na na'.
What I want to know is, did the great Chas & Dave introduce the conga to terrace culture, or had that standard version been doing the rounds long before it was reworked for Ossie? I was only six months old at the time and older generations of the family have little interest in Spurs, Chas & Dave or conga-ing and have therefore been of little help!
