I never heard of Sandro Tonali before he joined Newcastle....that's my knowledge of up and coming European players

That’s not how football works. Other things have changed in that team and other players have declined to cause them to not improve. That and obviously other teams sign good players too.
Results wise in some competitions it has improved as well .. a lot.
