Maverick players were always rare, that’s why they were called mavericks.
If by worldies you mean players whacking the ball hopefully from distance, they aren’t my favourite goals, or a demonstration of skill, literally anyone scored those not just mavericks.
The mavericks haven’t disappeared, it’s just that the general technical standard has vastly improved and players who would once be considered unicorn mavericks aren’t so much anymore. They have less of an advantage technically.
Even back in the day the Darren Huckerby’s and David Ginola’s weren’t coveted by the very best, they were sideshow Bob’s at also rans.
