An over-used word but apt : Awesome.

I wanted to take this chance to ask something I’ve wanted to know for a very, very long time . PLEASE bear with me for a bit . This shouldn’t take long .?

I’ve read this site for many years , but until very recently I never had the courage to “join in “ . Everyone on here seemed to be razor-sharp of mind / wit and word . IT skills beyond my IPhone competence .

The cool kids at school , the top table ( wheresoever they have tables ) .

But recent events bring me here , and so ( deep breath) ; I’m going to ask my question . It means a lot to me , and given it happened almost half a century ago ; I though this was the best thread for it . You seem the most venerable and wisest people in the village.

Here’s the question. Clears throat :

Were any of you part of the pitch invasion after the home game on May 14th 1977 ?

Then last game of the seasons (2-0) v Leicester City .

We were already relegated but played great and won two nil .

There was a pitch invasion at the end.

Most people left but there were probably 500 on the pitch I front if the old West Stand who stayed put .

I was in the corner bit of West / Paxton extension with my dad . I was too young to go on my own and ( after a few attempts., my dad refused to stand ; to my chagrin ) .

The noise , songs and energy were overwhelming. It went on for about 45 mins . The players came out , the boss came out on the old balcony of the W stand . It was like a revivalist meeting. It really was spiritual to experience. The support for KB was extraordinary. Imagine that today .

Anyway ; I’ve seen us win everything we’ve ever won since that day BUT (apart from 1984 ) nothing has affected me more than the relegation wake that happened on the 14th May 77 . I’d even say that in its own way May 77 was more powerful than May 84 .

Anyway; before I begin to cry ;

Were any of you there that day ? And what do you remember?

I apologise for the time it’s taken you read this ramble , but it means a lot to me .

Thank You .

I was there up on The Shelf. Can't remember much about that day, the games at Villa and home to Leeds stick out more.
Was the precursor to the best season I had following Spurs.

I was in the Paxton. At the time I was probably a bit old-21- but fuck it .I jumped over the wall and got involved in that incredible atmosphere on the pitch. it was as if we could will the club back to the first division.
Every other club I have seen relegated ended in tears, but our reaction was phenomenal. I couldn't wait for the next season to start and with the news of the Argentinian signings, the excitement was off the scale.
As with most of us old gits, that time was probably the most fun we had.

That’ was going to be my follow- up , but thought I’d already “ shot my load » soi disant ; with all youse patience wise . The young uns will never understand but ( for someone of my generation ) was a ( fucking ; apologies if offended) revelation.

I was too young for former times first hand , but expletive me wasn’t that some year . Literally unbelievable.

I read a few years ago that someone asked about 77-78 and what people remembered about it . But it never seemed to take hold .

I hear you brother .

From Sheffield Utd right through to the “ final act “ in Hampshire . It’s hard for me to describe how good it was .

Peter Taylor v Bolton .

Don’t get me started .

Anyway , all this doom and gloom about finishing 7th .

We were poor fora few years , went down , stuck together, had ( for me at least ) best year ever .

And it all started 14 May .

You had to have been there .

Bless you my brother.

PS : Were you at Southampton ; last game ?

That’s exactly what I meant ; relegation was the most positive thing that I’d ever experienced . Like I said in another reply ; it led to the best year of my life ; football - wise.

Funny you say about « kids « but I remember seeing a few fellas 4 or 5 years above me at school, they’’d havebbeen’15 / 17 , Sounded like the Maracana to me.

Thank You for replying . I know the new stadium’s great , but fuck I miss the Paxton . I miss the whole (pre-all seating ) ground for that matter .

I’ve taken ale - apologies for swearing .

Your reply meant a lot to me .

Yeah, we were at Southampton, stressful day. Ended up on one if those pub barges moored on the Thames.
Went pretty much every game, missed Wall away and Hull at home, great days.
Particular favourite was Mansfield away,3.3 crazy day.
