We would have thrown the bag at him regardless at that point. I mean, I guess it's possible that we baulked at RDZ's demands and gambled that Tudor would see us to the summer where we'd then be in a better position to negotiate, but honestly we know the club tried to get De Zerbi in when Frank went. He's been our top target all along. I find it hard to believe the club decided to appoint Tudor when the opportunity to appoint De Zerbi was there if we just paid the money.
I find it much more probable that De Zerbi wanted to recharge after what was a very intense time at Marseille.
In fact, I think when De Zerbi told us he wasn't ready to take a new job on, we then appointed Tudor, but I think we were continously speaking to De Zerbi and trying to convince him to change his mind.
Sure, we may have increased our offer to him financially as we grew more desperate, but the deciding factor was clearly De Zerbi deciding he was ready to take the job, and nothing would have changed his mind until he was ready.
It may also have been that he was waiting for United knowing he was on the shortlist, but then got wind that they were sticking with Carrick and thought, well if I want a top PL job, the Spurs one is likely the only one on the table this summer so I may as well take it now.
I am trying to think of examples where top managers just leave a job midseason and immediately walk into another top job, I am sure there are examples but I can't think of any recently. Usually managers want time out and to wait until the summer.
