How many would you expect?

When I was doing my badges it was around 90% of premier league academy players* never play top flight football. 70%+ get discarded from football altogether. That might have changed tbh. Be interesting to see up to date stats. Spursidol Spursidol might know?

*so players who moved to a top level academy from a lower level not included in that

But let’s say roughly 10 -15 players make it a season. 20 teams in the league. Do the math.
And who are the West Ham players you are referring to? I don’t really follow them tbh. Couldn’t tell you who was an academy product in their current squad.

Southampton for instance have always had a very well respected academy and pathway. Without being a major player in the league. Often parents are sold on that “next step” when choosing a club.

Something else to consider how many spurs academy players can you name who made it through the 90s, 00s, 10s?

What was their real “level”? World class, international, solid professionals, journeymen?

And semi-recently as an example in 2017 England won the World Cup for the under 20s. So a decent age. No longer kids.
Look where the starting 11 are now. Did include a Tottenham player too.
Just because they were doing so well then hasn’t automatically translated into huge success as they got older.

Stats are broadly the same as you quote.

When we had a few years of good academy intakes followed by a number of them going on loan to fill that 18-21 gap (PL2 like reserve league before it is 'ok' for a year maybe 2 years for 18-21 year olds - but way inferior to playing 'mens' football), I think the stats for Spurs might on average look like :

- One Year Intake is 12 youngsters
- In first year academy, identify 50% of having a chance of making it, 50% no chance
- By end of 2 years in academy, most of the 50% who were thought to have a chance of making it (plus one or two of others) were given a Pro contract (say 6 players)
- Most given a pro contract were out on a loan within a year or 18 months (say 4 players)
- Of those players loaned out maybe 3 out of 4 were involved in first team pre-season, which might extend to a couple of appearances or more each.
- Either one or two or three (at most) from that year group made fairly regular appearances in first team for a couple of years before sometimes being moved on as a better youngster from another year group seemed better.
- And ultimately if we got one player on average from that year group coming through to Spurs first team, that was a good result (not all become stars such as Kane, but an E international such as Townsend or Mason or Livermore as a squad player).

Most of the players who were loaned out by Spurs ended up having a good career somewhere in the EFL or national leagues - as a club with better players joining us we usually had a bit better than average success for players continuing to have a professional career (but its still maybe 40% of players in Spurs academy year 1). Others will drop out of football - good example being Jake Nicholson who made his debut alongside Kane in a UEFA cup match but left football within about 3 years.
