Europa games get a bit tougher too after AZ so probably a bit less large scale rotation midweek.

24 Oct AZ Alkmaaar (H)
7 Nov Galatasaray (A)
28 Nov Roma (H)
12 Dec Rangers (A)
23 Jan – Hoffenheim (A)
30 Jan – Elfsborg (H)

Galatasaray is certainly a tough away game
Roma looked very tough but they've only got 1 point from 2 games so far - field a top team but we may not need them
Rangers treat with respect as any Scottish- English game can get tasty
Hoffenheim and Elfsborg should be no more difficult than our first two EL games which we won

So certainly a couple of matches we may not rotate much, but for a couple of matches we will probably rotate as we have done for earlier EL matches - particularly if we beat Alkmaar to secure 9 points form the first 3 games ..... and probably need 15/16 points to finish in top 6 of the league and avoid the play off rounds in January.

Worth a mention that circa 50% of our first team squad is aged 24 or younger, so the squad we are building can more easily evolve over the coming decade :

Dejan Kulusevski (24)
Djed Spence (24)
Micky Van de ven (23)
Brennan Johnson (23)
Pape Sarr (22)
Radu Dragusin (22)
Destiny Udogie (21)
Wilson Odobert (19)
Archie Gray (18)
Lucas Bergvall (18)
Mikey Moore (17)

And of course there are others on the fringes of the first team, some of whom may join including Yang Min-hyuk (18), Will Lankshear (19), Alfie Devine (20) ............

Have to admit I am somewhat concerned with the nature of our main players. Way too many 6/10 to 7/10 players.

No concern

Kulusevski: excellent, top draw
Sarr: Mostly decent
VDV: fantastic with room for improvement
Solanke: does what you need

Slight concern

Udogie: young but defending can be weak
Porro: not been at the races as much this season
Vicario: can improve at crosses
Bentancur: up and down
Bissouma: up and down

More than just slight concern

Maddison: consistency is poor
Romero: switching off way to much
Son: struggling with age perhaps
Johnson: when he doesn’t score he doesn’t do anything
Werner: don’t need to say
Dragusin: looks good sometimes but really poor others

What to me seems bad is that players who are our leaders (Son, Maddison and Romero) are the ones who disappear when they going gets tough.

Agree, and might be being Captain Hindsight but the absence of leadership on pitch might be final reason why we lost yesterday and maybe Brighton.

Van de Ven, was captaining Netherlands u21's , and other than having potential injuries from hamstrings might be a good leader as might be Kulusevski who captains Sweden. Solanke's work rate and drive looks impressive and might be a reason why we looked so much better v Galatasaray when he came on - he's not played enough games for Spurs yet to be sure but if he continues in this vein he's another candidate. And we do need a captain and deputies. Davies has a lot of experience and has captained Spurs in europe on half a dozen occasions already, but he's not a long term choice.

Bentancur's lack of consistency since being injured a year or so ago is a concern, otherwise he might be a candidate as well. Bissouma's consistency has been a concern since he joined Spurs : might be he looked a good fish in a small pond at Brighton..

Sarr's strong point is his athleticism, but I think he needs to demonstrate more than that on a regular basis, although at age 22 he has time on his side to do that. But I do wonder if 19 year old George Abbott (currently on loan and excelling in L2) might run him close next preseason.

In general terms this squad has been put together in 4 years windows (except for Son and Davies) and to be fair we've avoided buying many disasters, But its impossible to avoid buying a few players who don't look as good as we hoped (and might even look average) and we just need to trade up on a few of those whilst also bringing through a few from the academy who the club will know well so probably less risk.

Looking forward to January, we know EL squad is full ....... and that means we need to drop one of existing EL players to include Spence in EL squad. And maximum number of changes is 2 players under uefa rules so not a lot of room for change.

The PL squad is under different rules with more opportunities - and the current squad can be categorised as :

GK -Vicario/Forster/Austin
RB - Porro (and Spence (also LB) in PL squad)
CB - Romero/Van De Ven/ Dragusin
LB - Udogie/Davies (also LCB)
CM1 - Bissouma, Gray
CM2 - Bentancur/Sarr
CM3 - Maddison/Bergvall
RW - Kulusevski/Johnson/ Moore
LW - Son/Werner(loan), Odobert
CF – Solanke/Richarlison/ Lankshear

Analysis under PL definitions :

Home Grown - Forster, Austin, Spence, Davies, Maddison, Johnson, Solanke (7 players)
Overseas - Vicario, Porro, Romero, Van de Ven, Dragusin, Udogie, Bissouma, Bentancur, Sarr, Kulusevski, Son, Werner, Richarlison (13 players)
U21's - Gray, Bergvall, Odobert, Moore, Lankshear (we can have unlimited numbers of u21's)

So we do have scope within PL squad to bring in a couple of new 'senior' players - but whilst ATM one player needs to be left out of EL squad to register Spence, then increasing the PL squad by (say) 2 players will mean 3 players in PL squad cannot be registered in EL squad, So it might be a problem to resolve in summer for 24/25 uefa squad to be 'right sized' with enough players covering each position 0 two problems being brought in can be catered for, more might be a problem which we need to avoid. Probably best to think of it as bringing forward a couple of purchases from Summer transfer window - and tbh, there are rarely more than one or two players who will improve Spurs who we want who are available in January,

Interesting to see what Ange/Lange decide to do in January - maximum of 7 games left in EL after January, probably more than 20 games to play in Pl and domestic cups after January.

Our current EPL squad total is 23, comprising 14 NHG and 9 HG players.

According to AI, we are allowed to add a non-registered player at any time, so we could add either an NHG or HG GK if we so wished.

But we do not have to include any 'marginal' players such as Robson who seems nowhere close to first team or Reguilon who has been ignored by Ange (except for on bench v Coventry) and seems to want to leave in Jan as he's not played this season and Whiteman (4th GK) is uncertain.

So we could easily add one or two or even three new players in positions we need to fill - depending on availability, and that's the biggest restricting factor. And if very good players not available we wait until summer rather than getting players who d not improve the squad and are then a problem to move on. My guess is we might find one or two suitable players which will improve our options

I said in a previous post we are effectively able to add 4 more in Jan and if we are doing well I think we could well add a few for an EPL top 4 push.

EL is a bit more complicated. Rumour today is we are looking at returning HG KWP and Winks. Edit and Mundle.
Odobert dropping out for Spence is the only other way we can change the squad.

I doubt very much if 'a few' are available who would upgrade the squad - plenty who are not of the right quality available but who are then a problem to move on. Most clubs struggle to find more than one maximum two players who improve their squad

Here's summit to chew on...
Currently, across all 3 competitions we've currently played in (EPL, EL, LC) we have 13 (THIRTEEN) different goalscorers...
Johnson, Son, Solanke, Spence, Maddison, Porro, Kulu, Bissouma, Romero, Sarr, Werner, Richy, Lankshear...
That's more than a whole fucking TEAM...

Who needs Vicario?!

0-3-2-5-3 formation for the next few months... fuck it!

Spurs had 23 players registered in the PL squad at end of last transfer window, including Reguilon and Robson, both of whom I'd expect not to be registered in squad at end of January transfer window, and less than the maximum 17 overseas players registered.

Whether there are players of sufficient quality in positions we need to fill who would improve the squad - and are available is always the question.

And indeed we need to ensure we are not blocking paths of some players out on loan such as 17 year old CB Vuskovic, 18 year old Phillips, 20 year old CM/AM Devine, 17 year old winger Moore, 19 year old striker Lankshear and a number of others - a few of whom might be considered for first team next season. Decisions, decisions !

What are the rules on January signings?

The UEFA Champions League, UEFA Europa League and UEFA Europa Conference League knockout hopefuls are allowed to register a maximum of three new eligible players during the winter. Since 2018/19, it no longer matters whether those players have already played in the competition for another club, even for another club still in the competition.

When will squad changes be confirmed?

Clubs have until 24:00 CET on Thursday 6 February to communicate their desired squad changes. Once all teams' changes are approved by UEFA in each competition, the full list of ins and outs will be published on UEFA.com.

Edit: As per Auscock Auscock post of Jan 8, changes must be registered by Thursday 6 February 2025 (24:00 CET)

Kinsky is classified as U21, and in the EPL there is no limit on U21 players.
We are allowed 25 players (not including U21s) in the squad. We cannot have more than 17 NHG.
We currently have a squad of 23, so we can sign 2 more players in this window, either 2 NHG, 2 HG or 1 of each.

Wouldn't Kinsky be cup tied in the Europa League? Is that a thing in European competition?

POK suggests Odobert is out for most of the season. Assuming Spence takes his slot and Kinsky takes Werner's this is the potential new EL squad:

Omitting Forster could release another slot, NHG or HG.
How bad is Vic's injury? Maybe he could be omitted allowing us 2 new players?
Unfortunately, even U21s must be included in the maximum permitted squad of 23.

3 changes to EL squad maximum - depends who we bring in as to who come into the squad, so I don't think we can be certain which players join the squad (although agreed Spence and Kinsky are 2 potential joiners out of 3) until end of the window.

If Odobert's return is drifting out to say April (POK suggests its drifting but nothing specific), then it makes no sense to include him in squad). We might then be thin on forwards so Werner may or may not be dropped out - may depend on whether Richarlison will stay fit and if another forward joins. So Spence in and Odobert looks a sensible scenario.

If Ange wants Kinsky in EL squad then Forster is the obvious one to drop out (Austin is CT so keeps his place).

I had wondered if a loanee who is a List B might be called back to increase squad numbers (and if so I'd expect them within the next week) but agree other u21's joining (including Yang) would need to be included in the EL squad numbers.
