Transfers Summer 2019 transfer thread

Latest Spurs videos from Sky Sports

4231 with 2 defensive mids (Dier/Wanyama/Dembele) gave us by far our best season in 16/17, albeit a little bit defensive looking.

The rise of Sissoko has been great, but the decline of Wanyama, Dier and loss of Dembele has hurt us and stopped us playing this winning formula.

I like Winks, Eriksen, Dele - but if you put any of them in the 2 man midfield it's simply not the same system.

I don't believe we lack or lost quality in defence or attack since then, Walker wasn't that important. It's the midfield cover, breaking up play in different areas, positions taken with and without the ball, and of course the transition from defence to attack that I identify as what we do differently now.

At the time I remember Dembele blaming the narrow pitch of White Hart Lane causing teams to set up defensively in the middle against us. Whether or not that's the case, we scored more and conceded less then.

The last 3 seasons we conceded 26>36>39 league goals. 0.68 to 1.03 per game.
As for goals scored, 86>74>67. 2.26 to 1.76 per game.
Goal difference, +60>+38>+28
Really concerns me having a 32 goal swing in our goal difference in a 2 year period.

So in regards to transfers - it feels to me like the system, or lack of personnel to implement and repeat a winning formula is more the problem. I don't rate Dier, but believe we missed him more than I would like to admit, or at least the duty he performs. Would maybe say his most useful quality was winning headers all over the midfield. I like the idea of Tielemans, Ndombele and other good footballers we have been linked with - but there's perhaps an argument for getting Dier back fit, and bringing in another central midfielder over 6ft next to him / Sissoko (as Wanyama and Dembele are) rather than these smaller (in frame as well as height) creators?

I think walker (and rose) in the 16/17 season were far more important than you seen to be alluding to. Firstly, they were both playing very well, secondly they were our source of width... and finally, Walker could actually take players on - something tripps is either scared to do or cannot do - so whilst his crossing may not be as good, he could get in behind teams. Just look at the dippers fullbacks, 30 assists between them this season plus goals as well... during that 16/17 season we had the best fullbacks in the country...

We look miles off winning the title & you can't base a season around winning the CL.
Fact is modern day Tottenham rarely win a cup & if we do it's a domestic 1. So he could go elsewhere & pick up medals & higher wages. Do you think we have are likely to win the title or CL next season? I think if your honest you'll say no.

We are a way off from competing but people do need perspective and rationale when it comes to it. We are the 6th biggest team financially/ valuation wise in the league yet we consistently make the top 2-4 League wise finals and semi finals. That in itself shows that whilst we don't have anything tangiable to demonstrate evidence of our success we have in fact been extremely successful compared to the status of the club in recent years. It is a growth spell and as anyone can see we have bridged the gap substainally with other English teams not just on the pitch but off the pitch as well. This will only hold us in good stead as we hopefully continue to grow.

The league is run by mega rich people that throw money recklessly at success and whilst we as a club are probably too prudent with our finances, we have shown or at least demonstrated that a little craft, graft, tact and elbow grease can get you very far. The club has grown significantly when previous managers such as Jol, Redknapp & AVB said it wasn't possible. Pochettino & Levy have shown these guys up when all that was needed was a more rigid spine and a solution finder not a problem solver.

I don't expect us to win anything of vast importance next season, but I fully expect our mindset to be of a club that wants to and believes it can if the cards drop well for us. That's he business model we have to adhere to in times where clubs like Wolves, Leicester and even Everton or Fulham can use their owners money, money that's been loaned to them not given to them it must be said, like confetti.

That money will in time have to be paid back either through monthly or annual payments or when these owners sell us to a buyer paying a vastly over inflated price to accommodate/ adjust their financial deficits.

Organic, ambitions yet realistic growth is best. Always has been and it always will be

Totally agree. That's why I think it's mad to suggest he should stay as we are likely to win a big prize. Not that you said that. Top 4 & an fa cup would be great for us next season. But if Eriksen has a chance to go to a team where they regularly win big prizes then I can't say I blame him. But if he stays it will be great for us & it's Still a good club for him to be at. New stadium, likely top 4, a top manager & I guess a decent pay rise! Although I am not sure what he is on now & would want in the future.

On the topic of outgoings/loans out.

With Poch's old stomping ground Español getting Europa League football this upcoming season, why not try getting some of our more promising youth players out there on loan? Edwards for example. Or Janssen if we cannot sell him?

Let’s just remove the money factor for a minute, to focus on the idea of players moving because they want to win trophies. In my opinion, when your club has been in a position where we have for the last few years, going elsewhere because you want to win is laughable. Who can our current roster of players blame for not winning a trophy this year? They were literally 90 minutes away from winning what is arguably the biggest trophy!

And that’s not really an anomaly. We have been in the race for the league, in the FA Cup and League Cup semis and now the CL final this year. At some point it’s incumbent on the players themselves to seal the deal. That’s all I’m saying. I understand a player at a small time, tin pot club like Spam wanting to leave to win because they hardly win games let alone trophies. But for a Spurs player to suggest they should leave to win is a bit ridiculous at this point.

And yeah, maybe we won’t win the league, I don’t know. It’s pretty crazy that Liverpool only lost one game and didn’t win (although I will never say that to my pool supporting friends). But I think we’ll be better than what we showed this year and Liverpool will be worse. City is city. I’m not fussed about them because they’ve bought it.

Fuckin hell, winks and skipp in the middle, that will take us far......we need upgrades I'm afraid or we'll never challenge for owt. Skipp not good enough, and winks still only potential for me. Give him a year if he doesn't improve, move them both on. We need world beaters guys.......

Skipp hasn't yet shown what he's capable of. Maybe there's a world beater in there already. But more importantly, we need players who can play well together as a team, who compliment each other. Look at Liverpool's squad and tell me how many world beaters they've got? The reason why they did so well this season, is because they have a team that works as a unit. If any of them leave and go to play for a different club, they will not reach their highs of this season.

This.

Some think Liverpool succeeded because they spent big, but they succeeded because the spent well.

Right and the expectation is that we make the champions league, it is even higher now we got to the final. The manager himself is helping drive that expectation up, he wants to open a new chapter and spend like the richer clubs, he'll possibly have a big spend this season and then what?
