Transfers Summer 2019 transfer thread

Latest Spurs videos from Sky Sports

I am just going to draw a line under this discussion and wait until the end of the window, I respect others views and even if we don't sign a player I am not the type to shout "I told you so" because the reality is, all of us will be gutted if that happens, I don't want that to happen.

I hope we get some business done and I am completely wrong and it just proves to be me being cynical.

Poch is probably looking at the long term. Sessegnon could be our left back for 10 years at top level. Rose on the other hand is closing on 30 and if we don’t sell now we may never get a good price.

Our system we employ requires non stop speed and energy for the full back positions. That’s why Rose and Trippier maybe deemed surplus to requirements.

If we sold Trippier and Rose and got Sessegnon and AWB let’s say that’s our full back position sorted for a decade.
Non stop speed and energy doesn't equal Ben Davis though.

Why?

True although he is a pretty decent CB and with Verts getting on that could be his role. I know KWP has played LB quite a few times just wonder whether he is good enough to step up as the cover.
He can fill at in a pinch if we have all our CBs injured or have a man sent off but full time he is no where near good enough.

It’s just when you look at where we need to spend. Ndombele and Lo Celso are key to us even if we keep Eriksen as we need depth in the middle. Rose is still good but probably the last time we could get money for him and Trippier is ok but not really suitable for our system.

I am not really sure we are going to sell Davies, Rose and Trippier in one window and get 3 full backs in. The ideal would be AWB on the right with Aurier as cover and Rose on the left with Sessegnon as his competition but that ain’t affordable IMV.

We shouldn't have a desperate need for money right now, we should be able to keep Davis and Rose buy Sessegnon and we can see which two come out on top, I'm sure we can sell Tripper if we need tbh I'd rather keep him and sell Aurier

Nothing changed, a wish list is a wish list, not a list of demands I expect the club to adhere to.

An ideal window plucked from imagination and a realistic window where we have to deal with skyrocketing valuations, agents playing games, rival teams bidding, change of hearts etc are two very different things.

My ideal window would see 4, maybe 5 in but I'm also very realistic about the difference that exists from writing out an ideal list on a forum to the reality of running a football club and what must go on behind the scenes that makes things far more complicated than me plucking names out of the air on a fan forum mate.

I'd like fresh blood of course but I don't understand why there is a feeling of desperation about it. I'm a huge advocate for either signing the right player or no player at all.

It's a fans forum not a boardroom, we're all allowed to have a little Dream Team fun.
Mate this club will not get away with it again by buying no-one we have to bring people in 3/4 at least but this is spurs so we wait and see.

Using the champions league run as a barometer for where we currently stand is a big mistake imo.

That's a knockout competition, one in which we had some good fortune go our way (not saying we didn't deserve to be in final because the guts we showed during that run was unbelievable) but we did have some fortune along the way, such as VAR against City for example.

Our league form is a better indicator of where we are and in what direction we are trending, I understand your point about a lengthy injury list and fatigue but doesn't that just highlight that we need reinforcements?

We lost more games this season than the last two combined, I truly believe a big part of that is because we have been inactive in the last two windows, we have even had Poch saying we need to spend because is is concerned with our form in the league.

I think it's a huge mistake to believe we can continue to operate like this and remain in the top 4, let alone win any trophies.

Well let's look at the core squad over a collective period for a better reflection. Taking Walker and Dembele out of the group we have achieved more with this group of players than any group has in what 20 years? Trophies are of course important but I'm talking growth from a business perspective as ultimately without the business element the football club wouldn't be what it can and should be.

We struggled this season but we had a hugely transitional year relocating stadium, no preseason for 9 of our starting XI, 55% of our squad missing just under 33% of games played due to injuries or international call ups. No home advantage for 75% of our campaign etc.

There are variables that have to be considered. Take for example the games on which we lost or at least some of them. If we had played like we were happy with a draw I can think of 4-5 games where we would have not lost. Burnley away, Wolves at home, Southampton away, the Woolwich game at home we gave away a last minute penalty because we had pushed forward for a win (we got lucky in that one granted with them missing the penalty), insane individual errors (I think we'd made 13 leading to goals last season, something that is solely down to the individual in question), it was a hard slog but we got there in the end.

I think we were able to play Son, Dele, Eriksen and Kane on maybe 10-11 of our 58 games, that clearly will have its effects on us, let alone all of our central midfield missing at least 14-15 games each and 3 of our 4 central defenders being out for a minimum of 12-14 games each.

I'm not saying I don't think we need new signings, I absolutely do but I don't think it's at the desperation levels you mentioned in the post I replied to. I'd love Ndombele and Lo Celso, I think they both have all the hallmarks of quality that would improve us but if clubs like Real Madrid or Juventus are sniffing around them we will have little choice but to bide our time. I want signings but only the right ones and I definitely don't want to see the club smash their transfer record by nearly 100% getting players in that I'll disrupt the financial harmony within the squad and the team. Risky business we've seen fail at Leeds, Sunderland, Woolwich, even at Manchester United. For £88m or whatever Lo Celso is seemingly valued at, I'd want a little more than a guy who couldn't cut it at PSG. I make the club right taking its finances seriously but that's just my opinion when looking at the whole view of it all. Each to their own and all of that.

Well, as it stands, it's 9 disagrees and 2 agrees and I don't see the evidence for the "general consensus in regards Levy" that you pray-in-aid for yourself - I certainly don't and many here don't but, anyway IU, thanks for your reasonable and courteous reply. I can't give it both a like and disagree, so I've gone with like just this once!

I meant the general consensus outside of the forum amongst fans is that our transfer activity is not good enough for a team with ambitions of winning the league, or at least a manager that has ambitions of winning it.

But anyway, thank you for your courteous reply as well, just shows we can disagree and still have a polite discussion.

Also, if you have kids, happy fathers day mate.

Where are people seeing me say not to bring anyone in? I've constantly said I want signings but I'm also saying o don't see our current situation as being a desperate thing.

The right signings or no signings for me. I would like maybe 4 new faces in the squad but I'd be gutted to see the club spend silly boy money on players who turn out to he a bit shoddy. The right deal or no deal at all for me pal, it hasn't done us too bad to date that policy.

Lo Celso is probably a £50m player. £60m would be more than fair. The same applies for Ndombele, maybe an extra £5m on top of that. That's £125m let's say yet the clubs we are negotiating with apparently want a rumoured £140m-£150m, that's a solid £40m-£50m over player value for both combined. It simply isn't practical for a club of our size to spend so loosely when we have debts to pay.

West Ham had a £29m bid accepted for Maxi Gomez, a player who was being quoted in the press as being £43m a few weeks ago, let's just see how the transfer business pans out over the summer before we all go a little mental over it, it's still early days.

1/10 on now to sign Jack Clarke.

I really like the kid, he moves like a Tottenham player so I'm well up for this kind of move if it comes off.

My ideal window would be Clarke, Sessegnon, Ndombele, Lo Celso and Atal, maybe Diawara as well if there's a cheap deal to be had on him as a Wanyama replacement. For me it wouldn't get much better than that but this isn't football manager and I ain't Ron Atkinson :chicco:
