Thing is when you're at that level there's a limit to whom you can attract even if you are splashing out, so you end up overpaying for mediocrity (or worse)...

See Everton....

Even look at City when they first got rich.

Newcastle will face similar.

Smart scouting/incremental grown if is a far more reliable track to climbing the table but it takes patience.
You're absolutely right but our scouting department hasn't been on the ball. No pun intended. Perhaps that's where we really need to change.

You can buy great players but turning them into a cohesive unit is another thing entirely.
This is a good point.

The "bigger" players you have the bigger the coach/coaching team you need that can get them on the same page. Look at what happened to Kovac at Bayern. A relatively young, promising coach but totally out of his depth in a locker room with names like Lewandowski, Müller etc.

I think Airfixx Airfixx is right, spending a bunch of money but having no real direction in terms of scouting is just basically throwing shit at a wall and hoping it sticks (which is basically what we are doing already but just on a tight budget.)

What we need imo is better scouting so we can identify players that WILL improve us in areas of weakness and when we do identify those players, not compromising with alternatives because they are cheaper that are going to be pointless squad fillers that do nothing for us.

This is why I think Levy needs to stay away from the football side of things and appoint a DOF, Levy can handle running the business but he enjoys the deal too much and it always ends up hurting us on the pitch.

ENIC and Levy both have said in the end of season speech that they want to show ambition on the pitch and bragged about net spend, well it's time for them to show us they really mean it, the way to do that is proper scouting and purchasing targets that will improve us.

DOF: Hell yeh...

I also welcome the consistent vision it ought to bring and the synergy between type of players signed and managerial appointments it should bring...

(Tbh, the end of season spiel had passed me by this year... I'll have to have a look.)

Well, ungodly amounts of money will eventually get you there. But you're right that all of these petro-infused projects initially have spent very poorly.

And at today's prices the cost of creating a Chelsea or a City would be insane. Multiple billions.

Indeed... Look at PSG (and to a degree City)... Still can't make a dent in the CL.

United have spent a billion+ and counting trying to claw back their glory days..... Still finished nearer B'muff than Liverpool this year.

I don’t really understand as his primary position is on the left where we’re well stocked - Son, Bergwijn, Sess. Don’t know how effective he is on the right.

Sorry, but Perisic and Sess, can't be in the same sentence. Sess didn't play one important game in EPL and Perisic scored in semi final and final WC. The thing that he is older i can understand, but for the small amount of money he is a safe bet, and Sess is a stil gamble in every appaearence on the last minutes.
