True, but I guess they don't always come off - Demarai Gray would be testament to that. I'm honestly a little unsure about why Ajax are so keen, but I guess it's no bad thing to have interest in your players.
The Bergwijn thing is super weird because he'd be their record signing. There's no other young winger that would be a fifth the price to take a chance on? At Ajax? It's weird as hell.

ETH comes in banging the desk "I MUST HAVE BERGWIJN!"

I do find it slightly funny that people say we should recruit like Leicester/Dortmund/Ajax etc.. with smart young signings, and then Ajax want Bergwijn and are possibly willing to break their transfer record to do so and no one thinks twice about it.

18 months under Mourinho did him no favors.
So saying the 18 months under Mou didn't occur then what type of progression did you see for Bergwijn? And even taking into account the most positive assessments of his qualities where do you see him ending up as a player? In more general terms I'm asking about his ceiling as a player as determined by you.

And I wouldn't be so caught up by Ajax' xfer record. Prior to this it was Dusan Tadic (I believe) and I don't htink anyone on this board would be clamoring for him.

We're looking to sell Kane so will have a bit of cash for 2nd CB.
Why wouldn't Torres be on that list?

.........That's the basis for that link being a sure thing is it?

I can understand wanting to believe it, but come on......

(Btw, we're not "looking to sell"; City are looking to buy...... Significant difference.)

I'm still kinda expecting Kounde > Chavs = Sanchez > Seville to happen tbh.... Which, in turn, I think would be the basis for any further CB purchases we might make.

Personally thought he looked set to be a real player in his first few months at the club, looked quick, intelligent and a goal threat, I thought he was going to nail down the spot alongside Kane and Son in our front 3.

Then last season happened...

:bergwijnconfused:

No idea where he goes from here, if he stays then he needs to get his mojo back quick or this run of form becomes his level.

On another note, how annoying is it that we have these handful of games prior to the window closing and then an international break before it feels like the proper season starts. Sack off the internationals, surely there is no appetite for them especially after a Summer tournament, and close the TW across Europe prior to the first kickoff in whatever league starts first.

THIS... On both counts.....

Just extend the int. breaks elsewhere in the year if need be and have the trf window run Jan, June & Jul... No fuss.

Only quibble I'd have with your assessment is the "quick" part. That was the word before he got here and I was underwhelmed by this aspect as well as his overall pace. But he does seem a reasonably intelligent and tactically disciplined player with a decent touch. My problem with that is it doesn't make him a difference maker. Sonny has a bad touch but he has qualities that determine games so it's easy to deal with his sometimey touch. Bergwijn doesn't seem to have any decisive quality, no threat. And for me that severely lowers his ceiling.

Yeah, I checked the schedule and saw Intls on Sept 2 wknd. What a bummer! And by then we may not even have all our players having had a training session. Puts a damper on the 'new season high'.

They're nothing today. It's kinda sad and if I was a Newcastle fan, I'd blame Stevie Carr.
"I wanna go to a bigger club and win things"

Well that went well.
Don't, blame Freddy Shepherd who was spending two times income at the time. A similar thing was happening at Chelsea until Abrahamovic saved them from oblivion, that debt is still their at Chelsea but it is guaranteed against Abrahamovic's personal fortune which is a risk because if the British Police ever take the Swiss Governments advice his funds in Britain will be frozen.

I'm a big fan of the idea of splitting the season into club season and international season. Feel like both clubs and countries would benefit from the continuity of having the squads together uninterrupted, no pointless call ups for duffers to fill out int. squads because the Top 4 players have minor muscle strains, play more midweek League fixtures in place of the internationals so still plenty of time in the summer for a rest, and most importantly I don't have to see the football I am interested in on hold for pointless friendlies and qualifiers against Macedonian farmers...

Very good question. Clearly he got off to an amazing start but for me he ran with his head down, with no clear direction and that's not particularly useful, we've had headless chickens before.

I'm all for giving people a chance, I was sad to see Janssen go without a proper run but understand we don't always have that luxury. I would prefer to see Bergwijn gone and he money reinvested.

Man, I've got this horrible feeling we could live to regret selling him to Ajax.

But, on the other hand, if it freed up an attacking winger slot that could be invested in with the eventual Kane money, it could be tempting. I think something that has been disappointing with Bergwijn is that he's quick but not lightning fast.
Counter to that is he can play in tight situations. Good footballer and he would fit say Man City’s system far better than Lucas…. But Jesus he needs to sort his finishing otherwise it’s moot!

Schuurs has finally made the progress we expected from him. But I don't think he will be transferred this season anyway.
Thought he looked fantastic against Mane, bullying him and stopping him in his tracks. I heard he wasn't for sale this year, but I'd love to think we'd be in for him. Though judging by Paratici's signings and targets, he has little knowledge of the world outside of Serie A

Is there any evidence whatsoever that Chelsea would be in trouble if RA left?
Way I see it he initially pumped a huge sum of his own money in, grew the club exponentially and now they're one of the biggest earning clubs in the world, supplemented somewhat by him.
They may not be as ruthless if he left but sadly for us I think they'd still be well above us.
