I think a Director of Football with a clear strategy and vision would be hugely beneficial.
Unfortunately, as we’ve seen over the years, whilst Levy demands to have such a huge influence on things at the club, a Director of Football system will not work.

We go from Director of Football system to no Director of Football, we’ve had DoFs whom the manager has wanted, DoFs whom the manager hasn’t wanted, every DoF we’ve had over the years has had different philosophy’s and views which means we’ve had no continuity or structure.

Just shit management from top to bottom really, and again unfortunately it’s hard to pin that on anyone but the chairman.
This is exactly it.

Our more successful years under Harry and Poch were without a DoF. This system doesn't work with levy in charge.

The only time it has worked was to change the tide under Jol with Arnesen as DoF. It allowed us to move up a level but the gap between mid table to EL is easier to bridge than getting into the top 4, which is what we did with Harry and Poch.

I think we just need a good scouting system that the manager has control of. At the end of the day he works with the players not levy. The scout just goes and finds those players. Levy needs to stop fucking about with getting cheaper alternatives or leaving deals last minute to save a buck.

"Tottenham were really interested in Militao," Fabrizio Romano revealed to the Here We Go Podcast.
"They were asking for him on a loan with a buy option and no obligation to buy, only a buy option in the last week of transfers, but Madrid said always no," the transfer guru added.

Romano explained why Blancos didn't want to part ways with Eder: "Because they have no centre-backs, a lot of injuries and the covid situation, so they were preferring to keep this player, and that’s why it was so complicated."

According to transfermarkt he has a "knock" and has missed last 3 games since getting sent off. Mainly on the bench previously.
CB who can play RB and MF.

I agree about the quality of players recruited but Levy doesn't identify, scout and sign players without input from both the scouting team and the manager.

Two examples :VDV and Coutinhos. Levy let Redknapp and Poch have the last say on both of them.
Youth players, maybe, first team players, not a chance.

I'll respectfully disagree.

We need a DOF that can handle scouting and player recruitment. Football is moving away from the setup where managers are the key decision makers involved in transfers. Because 99% of managers don't have the time to also be that heavily involved in scouting.

Our best recruiting years under Poch was when Mitchell was here who understood Poch's system and knew what Poch wanted and needed and could deliver that, and all Poch had to do was say "sure, let's go for that one".

Our years post Mitchell may have been more successful on the pitch, but that is in part because a lot of the squad that Mitchell put together is still here. Players bought after he left have all either been square pegs for round holes, or round pegs but not the correct size for the hole so to speak.

In modern football, the most successful teams tend to be the ones with a sporting director pulling the strings, and a manager that can focus on the on pitch work as much as possible.

If Spurs want long term success and stability this is a model that the club will have to give in to.

Why would we sell Son, Lloris, or Dele? A new manager can try getting Dele back to his best before giving up on him, Son is close to a new contract and Lloris is better than anyone we will be buying with the few million Levy is willing to spend.
lloirs has too many ruts where he becomes a liability, hes never been anything more that a shot stopper and when he goes into one of his ruts hes not even good at that.

dele has been shit for years. its time to take what we can, weve already seen his value plummet over the last few years. its time to accept hes just not a very good footballer...

sons value would probably mean we could get a player like grealish who would offer us more over the course of a season. when sons not red hot hes stone cold and if anything a hindrance in certain games... sons only good on the counter, grealish can get on top of games and get us in control where we wouldnt need to be on the counter all the time to see our best stuff

Sorry the bit I highlighted is just so out of date.

There a number of great articles on line about Klopp not being intimately in charge of player recruitment to the extent that Liverpool's recruitment guys had to harangue him continually until he agreed to accept Salah joining them - and the articles go on to say that he's so pleased that they had done their homework.

Most of our squad problems today come from Poch having too much say over transfers for 4 years, when bringing in the likes of Sissoko, Sanchez, Aurier (these being probably his best ones), Janssen (proudly announced as Poch's own scouting), N'Jie, Nkoudou, Foyth et al......and no players in that time being on the list of 'we must keep' now, sadly mostly on the list of 'please can we get rid of'

And his youth development policy only brought through Winks in 4 years.....giving us an HG issue now, whereas he sold off the HG youth he inherited (Bentaleb, Mason, Townsend, Carroll, Veljkovic et al) some for peanuts but others got £100m+

Poch like many, is a decent coach has shown no talent for player recruitment, and at Spurs no talent for youth development from the academy.

So we cannot afford another coach screwing up squad management which they do not have the time or skillset necessarily to deal with.

I'm not doubting that the DOF can work.it just won't with Levy there. He is too power hungry.

Tbh Mitchell wasnt really a DOF. He was what we need now. Someone that sees eye to eye with a manager and just identifies players.
I think the wording of the role is different. But as I understand it the DOF has heavy influence in the direction of play the team should be using. You cant have that with Jose. It just won't work with him or certain other managers.

So when you look for a new manager, then that person needs to be happy with working with a DOF. In this case Levy has to recruit 2 people. I don't see this happening.
