So he's an improvement?

Make your mind up chief!
When I said improvement I was speaking about improving the positions that were our biggest issue last season, IE right wing back and centre back. Have we improved either of those positions? No.
Richarlison improves our depth up front sure. But not our starting 11.

When I spoke about being cautious, it has been a cautious window to a large degree if you go through every signing.

Forster - free, old, home grown, chose him over a younger long term successor to Lloris. Very safe low risk signing.

Perisic - free, hopefully will improve the team but if he doesn’t and can’t adjust to the PL what harm, he was free. Will probably get 1 maybe 2 seasons max out of him.

Bissouma - solid pl midfielder. cheap. Upgrade on Winks. Extremely low risk transfer.

Richarlison - solid premier league player with a steady goals return in the league. Will provide good back up and rotation. Considering the money we spent we possibly could have got a better player but went with the safe premier league option.

Lenglet - loan, if he’s shit we tell him sod off, if he’s decent we keep him for cheap. Doesn’t really improve the team. Virtually zero risk transfer.

Spence - cheap championship punt. If he’s good he’s the next Deli brilliant. If he’s shite and the next Jack Clarke so be it, we flog him off again. Doesn’t improve the starting 11. Zero risk player.

This sounds ominously like Villerreal have put a hit out on Lo Celso

They tried it with Ndombele, but it turns out that his gut his rather robust:

I hope you’re right about Bissouma buts let’s see. He’s excellent but his highest level in his career has been Brighton, let’s see how he gets on playing for a far bigger club and in the Champions League. Is he better than Bentancur? We’ll see.

Perisic absolutely was a good bit of business and he should be a good addition, but he’s 33 so hardly a long term solution…

Bissouma is a brilliant player and will take us up a level.
Perisic is a great example of what we've done wrong too many times for too long - signing players who have potential instead of established players.
So what if he only has 1 to 2 good years left.
As long as he has them for us, then it's great.

What does that mean?
Newcastle have more money. They can offer enough to make Leicester say yes. We probably can't match it.
Even then, if they said yes to both, maybe Maddison would rather play Champions League with us, or maybe he would want to earn £350k a week at them because......they have more money than us.
If Maddison wants London, Champions League and Conté and we put in a competitive bid and salary, we’ll get him. If he wants to take the highest salary then Newcastle might outbid us.
The idea that the selling club always takes the highest bid is simply not true. The player’s own preferred destination will usually win over. It’s happened several times in this window with Raphina, Kounde and, I believe, Charles De Ketelaere.

They can turn down our bid. But it wouldn't be in their interest if he informed them he had no intention of signing for Newcastle.

You offer a lot of opinions as if they're dyed in the wool facts. They're not.

It remains to be seen if Lenglet is an improvement.
It remains to be seen if Perisic is an improvement.
It remains to be seen if Spence is an improvement.
It remains to be seen if Bissouma is an improvement.

Repeat ad nauseum.

The only "fact" where new signings are concerned, is that you cannot guage whether they are an improvement or not until after the fact.

I get the impression that you only see players as improvements if you rate them. That's not even a reasoned opinion, it's just personal bias.

It was only January that we had people on here, I don't know if you were one of them, that were bewailing us getting Juve "rejects" as they weren't an "improvement" on what we already had. Turns out they were wrong. So before you start throwing around claims that the players we have don't meet your personal criteria of "improvement," how about you keep your powder dry and let these players you are denigrating prove whether they are an improvement or not. For that matter, how about you do the same for existing players who have visibly "improved" under Conte's tutelage.

By all means discuss possibilities, but how about you refrain from making suppositions and trying to pass them off as cast iron certainties?

After all, you can look at a variety of players in the league who weren't established names, but came into their respective teams and "improved" them. Just as a sample I'll give you Robertson and TAA at Liverpool, Bowen at West Ham, James at Chelsea...

The list goes on...

Surely it's more about the teams he plays against. He's been playing against the same teams with Brighton and I really don't understand how he would play any differently against those same teams because he's playing for us. If Conte had thought he would play differently he might not have wanted him. I hope he plays exactly the same way. A great addition to the squad and my personal favourite acquisition of this window.

Haha Newcastle proper lowballing. I reckon once the price is found (probably about 55m or something) it will get hijacked, hopefully not by Woolwich Maddison is so so much better than Smith Rowe or Oldegaard.
