Transfers Summer 2022 Transfer Thread.

Latest Spurs videos from Sky Sports

Signing two players in January wasn't too bad, I was hoping for 2-3 signings. Whether they will be any good of course, we shall see.

For the summer, I think we need to (and I think we probably will) do more in the transfer market. I'd expect between 4-6 signings, mostly for the first XI. I think wing-backs for both sides of the pitch (first teamers), at least one centre half (likely left-side, first team) and a number 9 type forward to backup Kane. Then probably a Gollini replacement. And maybe another centre midfielder to give us a better option for 352. Then you have the likes of Davies, Reguilon, Emerson becoming squad players, with Sessegnon, Doherty, maybe Tanganga and Gollini shipped out.

*Edit - maybe some suggestions on who these players might be (the fuck do I know?) but Johnstone on a free as backup 'keeper, Perisic (on a free I think?) as left-wing back, Brozovic (free again?) in midfield, Pau Lopez is the name heavily linked for left-sided centre half. RWB not sure, I like Lamptey but maybe we will go down the Serie A route for that position. As a backup to Kane, I still like Toney at Brentford - he hasn't had the best season but I think he has good attributes, only 25 and he would take the role of backup in my opinion.

Agree with the home grown quote with some younger players. Ship out the dead wood. However I’d really like us to spend proper money on proven quality as well and for me that is Bisouma who walks straight into our starting 11. The other plate who we should have got 2 years ago is Sarr at Watford. Proper handful, pace power and skill. To me he looks like a proper conte forward player. Front 3 of Kane son and Sarr plus back up of berg and Lucas. Maybe kus as well unless he plays in number 10 role as he doesn’t have the pace for counters as much. Bis and skipp CM. With back up of PEH winks and Ben unless we ship out either winks and / or PEH. We still have Sarr to come in.

We are currently playing Emerson and Doherty at RWB and nobody at back-up striker. I have a hard time believing that Spence and Gouiri are worst than those two and nobody.

One of the problems with Gil other than him being young, lightweight and not ready for the PL at all was that his position was one that was filled by our 2nd best player (with Bergwijn as a back-up) and then not really used much by Conte when he came in.

There is much more opportunity for the two players mentioned because there is a need for them unlike with Gil where there was little to no fit based on where he plays.

Also debatable whether either are inferior to Gil.
I didn't mention that, I'm all in for getting them. But I don't expect them to make instant impact. Gil plays for youth Spain team and kicks asses there, check how he performed in 1st game at Valencia. It's just the jump to PL standards which is hard for every player.

Dirk Mertens is a transfer rumor "legend" - as I can't think of any player being linked to Spurs over so many transfer windows 😁
The guy's turning 35 in may and has been linked to Spurs basically in every transfer window since his days in PSV back in 2011 and he's been linked yet again for this summer

Even at 35, I'd still have him. Type of player you need in big matches and over the course of a full season, he earns you a fair few extra points

Ashley Phillips is one to keep an eye on. Personally, I think it would be better for his career development to remain at Blackburn for at least another season, as he'd get regular 1st team football in a familiar environment.
He'll turn 17 this summer.

Man Utd and Chelsea lead race for Blackburn's teen sensation Ashley Phillips

Man Utd and Chelsea leading transfer chase for Blackburn sensation Ashley Phillips after scouting 16-year-old all season

  • 19:00, 5 Feb 2022
MANCHESTER UNITED and Chelsea both want Blackburn teen sensation Ashley Phillips.
The Prem giants now have a constant presence at Rovers’ Under-21 games to watch the classy 16-year-old centre-half.

The England youth cap is under contract so it will cost a fortune to get him.

Phillips is rated the best discovery   at Rovers for years and a genuine top-level prospect at club and country level.

United raided Blackburn for 27-cap England star Phil Jones at the start of the Venky’s reign at Ewood Park a decade ago.

Chelsea are on the hunt for the best youngsters around for their well-oiled assembly line.

Everton and Tottenham have also been watching Phillips, but United and Chelsea head the queue.

Boss Tony Mowbray certainly feels Phillips is going places.

Mowbray told Lancs Live: "He's 6ft 4', he's fast, mobile and can pass it really well. He can use both feet, he's composed.

"Ash is just a phenomenal young boy; if you were to create a defender in the mould of how you would want one, this kid has got every attribute.

"But he is still just a young boy. He needs time, which is why he's training with the first-team so that he gets confident and used to the level of intensity.

"He's an exciting prospect, is all I'd say. But it's in a position where there is a lot of responsibility.

"It's not as easy to put a really talented young defender in as opposed to a talented young striker where it doesn't matter if he loses the ball every now and then.

"As a defender, you're judged on keeping the ball out of the net and winning your individual duels.

"He is just a boy but he's got some amazing attributes. We've got high hopes that he can progress quickly."

One area we need to reinforce is our HG player numbers - perhaps bringing in 2 or 3 players trained at other clubs affiliated to The FA .

Maybe Johnson (WBA) as 2nd GK replacing Gollini, possibly Spence (RB, Notts Forest/Boro), Johnson (AM, Notts Forest). Bringing in a 2nd GK for example frees up an overseas trained player place when Gollini loan ends. Ditto if we brought in Spence as a RB and sold Doherty etc

Our current compliment based on UEFA definitions :
Club Trained Players - Kane, Winks, Tanganga, Austin (3rd GK) and next season Skipp (total 5)
Players trained at other FA affiliated Clubs - Sessegnon (total 1 - we need 4 to get a full 25 man squad)

We should look to loan Tanganga out to get a run of games - something he's not got in his 3 seasons in Spurs first team. That's the only way we see if he can become anything other than a bit part player.

We also need to loan out a number of u21's to EFL clubs to give them experience and hopefully give us the next generation of Club Trained players.

Johnson and Spence both look very good against Leicester. Good ages and exactly the type of signings we should be making. They helped knockout Woolwich also so that's a big plus against there names

We need :
1. A back up GK to replace Gollini who's not a great GK and not worth cost of his option cost. Preferably HG.
2. RWB to replace Doherty
3 A back up striker - Next season Kane is 29, Son 30 and Moura 30. So we need to build a replacement front line for a year or two's time starting now. We will not be able to play Kane every match next season, so time to bite the bullet now.

The above are all essential - but we really need to bring in 4 - 6 players good enough to be first team players. The other places to buy players are :

4. CB's - Romero, Sanchez, Dier and Davies all seem to have adapted well to Conte's 3 at the back, but there's only 4 of them so we are vulnerable to being short with a couple of injuries. Rodon seems not to be trusted, so we need another experienced CB - preferably LCB. We might want a 2nd CB but doubt we have the capacity to bring in 2 CB's in summer window.

5 CM's - With Bentacur, Skipp, Hojbjerg and Winks (and potentially Sarr) we have a core of CM's, but probably need a creative CM as a 5th CM. We may get the bonus of a club trained CM for 2023/24 - but that's for the future

6. Lots of other positions to possibly upgrade, just a question of which players are available. But get the 5 positions above filled and we'll look good.

You regularly watch nice? Do you rate Thuram and todibo?
Not every week or anything, but probably 7/8 games this season, really Iike Galtier. Went out of my way to watch Gouri last season for Nice and French underage sides, just a very enjoyable player to watch.

Yeah, two of the standouts.. Galtier does a great job with these guys. Much like Lille/Botman last season, the tight back four and defensive work of the midfield really simplifies the job for CB's. Tobido very impressive with the ball and doesn't oversell himself for high balls he won't win. I do think his balance is a bit weird when challenged by targetman type. But yeah, he'll play for a top club again. Thuram is very good, I wouldn't say Galtier puts a leash on players but the way they play doesn't ask for Thuram to take the ball under pressure much, but facing the game he's awesome.. reminds me of Declan Rice a bit, very strong ball carrier and generally rounded technique, good defensive work. Really unique midfielder in that if there's space to run into he'll just eat up the ground and get you down the field in a flash. Interested to see how all three do second half of the season.. I do think a Nice could have used another player in the market.. Stengs has been brutal since joining in the summer.

I really like Todibo. First glimpsed and mentioned on here 4 years ago when he made his debut at Toulouse. Kept an eye out for him since. Did a bit of a piece on him a couple of years ago(https://thefightingcock.co.uk/forum/threads/youre-the-dof.35584/page-4#post-2280967) but I'm not sure the video clips I put together still work. There are very few cb’s out there that are more comfortable on the ball than Todibo. Big mistake moving to Barca, wasted a year, he had some defensive learning to do for sure, needed to find a good club and play every week, been getting that at Nice and working under Galtier this season shouldn't hurt either.

Haven't seen as much of Kephren Thuram this season, but I was watching a game a couple of weeks ago when he scored a cracking goal, picked up the ball in midfield, ran it forwards, played a one two and slotted it home with aplomb. My feeling (based on ad hoc times I've caught bits and bobs of him playing) is that his off ball/defensive game is not so strong, but technically and in terms of transition/progression he's promising.

Is there any chance we can bring back KWP? His winner over the weekend was pretty darn sweet. He can play on the left too! And is clubtrained!!!

We put an RM style buyback clause in his sale, right?

...right?
