If we are prepared to consider Kostic, who I think is a good LWB, but is 29, and has hardly played as LB last few seasons (as far as I know) why not consider Guerreiro (Dortmund 28yo) who can at least play both roles well, and is a year younger, and a little better.

I'd much rather we find someone younger, Go balls out for someone like Theo Hernandez (24yo Milan), who would suit LWB to a tee, but has played as a LB most of his young career, but if we are seriously going to consider Kostic then Guerreiro should also be considered, no?

Fee. Kostic only has one year left in contract. :levystare:

On serious note, Guerrero issue is injury proneness. We already have 2 left wing backs with this issue.

One who seems to be flying under the radar a bit is Hickey- a right-footed RB who by all accounts thrived over a full season in Serie A as a LB. I think we might want to be taking a closer look at him. That sort of flexibility is invaluable.

One thing that can be unimpeachably said about Levy, he's always done right by us in selling players. Got the best value and only sold when the situation was totally untenable.

He did about as well as he could have with Bale, Modric, Walker, Berbatov (except for the replacements), and Carrick. Held out against City for Kane and Modric with Chelsea too. Plus he sold our players to Real Madrid and Ferguson's United which we just obviously couldn't compete with when they became interested.

As you mentioned, compare that to Woolwich post-2005. Night and day. If only Levy bought as well as he sold.

I feel it's also stemmed more from Wenger's arrogance. He tried too hard to make an image of himself as someone who could develop any raw talent into top class players. He's willing to let go of his senior players in their prime if they asked for contract that would break the wage structure, and replace them with unknown quality. Only worked well until oil money firstly from Chavski inflating the market, as well as hoarding raw talent. His team from mid 2000 forward ended up in never ending rebuild.

As we'd seen with Woolwich in his final years, it turned out that it was Wenger who tried not to spend as much as Woolwich could afford. As Wenger lost more control of the club, the more money Woolwich ended up spending.

His holier than thou attitude is why Mourinho and Wenger bitter rivalry born. Always try to take moral high ground and talk about how other clubs should run. Latest is suggestion about World Cup every 2 year after crying about international football impact on player fitness when he was active as manager.

Allegedly (or so I read somewhere) we bought Gough for say £700k and Rangers bid £1m (making him first ever Scottish £1m player) which we felt we couldn't turn down making a healthy profit after one season as player wanted to leave for prestige reasons.

Huge shame for us

Now that you mention it, the fact that he sold Modric to Real for a lower fee than what Chelsea offered is very commendable.

I'm sure many business execs would have thought "well they have the oil money, they are too far ahead and we need the money" and sold him to Chelsea.

Modric is still bossing the midfield for Real Madrid.

Yeah he handled that situation properly and we still got quite good money for Modric.

Though considering how long he’s been bossing it for Madrid, they probably view it as a proper bargain. Still think he’s the best player I’ve ever seen at Spurs. Footballing genius.
 
I like Gil, I'd rather loan him to the PL or championship for a season or two then see what he does when he gets back. Son is pushing 30 and Gil is only 21, just because he didn't immediately set the world alight when he joined doesn't mean he can't become a good squad option for us, Spain have capped him 4 times so clearly got him earmarked for the future. We ain't gonna get £30m off anyone for him in the summer and if we end up taking a hit on him we should give him a couple more years anyway to see what he develops into at 23-24 once he's filled out and hopefully got used to the rigours of English football if we can find him a domestic loan.

Modric has been a total bargain for Madrid - 10 years playing for £30m, cheap as chips.

But doubt either Spurs or Madrid would have guessed that at the time of sale/purchase
 
Three obtainable midfielders for the list:

Ibrahim Sangare (6) 24yo PSV
Kouadio Koné 21yo(6) BMG
Khéphren Thuram (8) 21yo Nice

All have a combo of physical/mobility/press resistance/football.

Sangare (6) is probably the best passer of the three, with a really good range, can use both feet too. Little bit error prone, but never hides.

Koné (6) defensive qualities good (pressing/tackling) passing more conservative than Sangare, but progresses the ball and can dribble through pressure

Thuram (more 8) not so great defensively (but does bring physicality) passing ok, but carries the ball forwards, more of a link from midfield to - and supporting - attack


Obviously Tchouameni would have been on the list, but that ship looks to have sailed to Madrid.

Bellingham would obviously be nice too, but equally unlikely.

Regarding Gough and his one year, I think 2 other factors were in play. The European ban for us, put up against against rangers doing well and qualifying, but also there was a lot of talk that rangers wanted him badly before he joined us , he was a fan I think.
However his club, might be Dundee U, wouldn't sell him to them. Not settling may have been a cover for always intending to go back to rangers.
