Agree, but Gio was not a record signing, thankfully. Romero perhaps, but 100% NDombele was our first attempt at “current world class” level signing, at £60m and 200k wages, we utterly shat the bed.
I mean it wasn't difficult to wikipedia how many goals Johnson scored last season and how many goals Nico Williams scored last season..
I guess where I'd push back is that I think as time moves forward the correlation between transfer fee and footballing worth gets stronger, but the correlation between "marquee" and both footballing worth and transfer fee gets weaker.I can definitely appreciate the sentiment too but I think people get way too bogged down in the idea that price has a correlation to footballing worth. It just doesn't in these modern times where prices and wages are completely skewed by clubs that are willing to pay stupid amounts of money for what amounts to a bit of PR and feel good factor.

Chelsea signed Moises Caicedo for 100M and NGolo Kante walked away on a free.
Think we brought it down, by early exercise, to £42m odd. And, only about half NDombeles wages.€60m (£55.3m) fee so Lo Celso still about our 3rd highest signing I think.

So for only twice as much as he should be going for then? Surprised we are still using these negotiating methods but I guess they've borne fruit in the past...
