The opportunity cost is the ability to strengthen meaningfully in several positions (like you say) and also perhaps the added pressure to selling players.

You also don’t spread risk when you buy one big player instead of multiple mid players.

Excluding Bellingham… How many of these top 10 most expensive players were worth the outlay:

1. Neymar to PSG - £198m
2. Mbappe to PSG - £163m
3. Coutinho to Barcelona - £105m
4. Joao Felix to Atletico Madrid - £113m
5. Enzo Fernandez to Chelsea - £107m
6. Griezmann to Barcelona - £107m
7. Grealish to City - £100m
8. Lukaku to Chelsea - 97.5m
9. Dembele to Barca and Pogba to Man Utd - £89m

Coutinho, Felix, Griezmann, Lukaku, Dembele and Pogba look like obvious NOs.
Neymar, Mbappé and Enzo MAYBEs
Grealish YES

Expensive transfers are rarely clear successes. Does rice deserve to be joint 7th most expensive player in history?

I don’t think so.

This wasn’t the original point, which was:

Woolwich are so sure and committed to Rice being the player that gets them over the line that they will drop 100m on him.

No matter how sure we are and no matter how close it got us to a real team around Kane, we just wouldn’t be that committed.

And when Kane goes and we have zero world class players, maybe we should revisit how we feel then…

Liverpool spent 70m of their Coutinho money on Virgil and won things .

How did we do with the Bale money?

We're back to square one here..... i.e. Dependent on what you need from your money at the time.

Dippers shot their load on one position which was a weak link of an already good team.....

We used the Bale money to spark the necessary rebuild of a team that was being carried by a singular player on the brink of being top 3 in the world (when Messi & Ronaldo were at their peak)...... We couldn't have attracted a like for like replacement if we'd tried and thus would have got worse if we did try.

Mbappe a Maybe? You're on some serious drugs, fella.

He's only scored like 200 goals for PSG, 4 or 5 times Ligue 1 top scorer, won them the league and domestic cups several times...without even mentioning his crazy impact on their marketing.

But yeah, he's a maybe and Jack the lad a sure yes. Mon dieu...

He’s a yes. I did say that afterwards.

My reservations were just about whether two 90m players or even three 60m players could have had more effect. 180m is a lot of money.

But yeah… he’s the best player in the world. Not like I’m going to underrate him!
