Because they are in Europe and playing 2 games a week most of the season and can rotate.
We are not in Europe and most weeks we will have only 1 game.
We want and need ambitious players not those who are happy to come here to sit on the bench.
Well, we need some ambitious players who recognise that won't be firat choice initially but believe in themselves to force their way into being regular starters.

We (on the forum I mean) need to move away from the overly simplistic 'happy to sit on the bench' - we do need some players who know they won't be regular starters when they join, but are determine to make themselves regular starters. That won't apply to all players we are linked with, some simply won't accept that.

Did anybody watch football last season?

Did people not see how Pep finally managed to win a CL with City, by playing 3 and sometimes four cb's in a back four and ruthlessly turn over possession again, and again, and again. Size, physicality, technique. Dan Burn at lb for Newcastle. Ben White at rb for Woolwich. You're selling yourself short with any squad build that doesn't give you the option of playing like this in the coming season.
Van de Veb at LB gives you that, so you also need Tapsoba as well

Indeed, but you could still slice it two ways even if they do come...

Are they happy to compete?
or
Are the happy to take the dosh and concede to being a mere squad player if it comes to it?

Only time tells either way.

I like to think that we are past signing those sort of players who come in and treat Spurs like a holiday camp. if I were a new CB signing for the club I'd relish the opportunity knowing that we conceded 63 goals this season and there's spots up for grabs and could be potentially responsible for turning the team's fortunes around.

But yeah players with strong mentalities are needed, like Maddison who could have played CL football but chose us because he clearly backs himself, I guess that's where player profiling comes in.

For me this is the crucial nuance that many on here seem to be missing in their thought process.

Accepting that you probably won't be a regular starter initially splits (albeit crudely) as you say into two groups - those determined to get into the regular starters, and those happy to sit and take their money each week and just play if called upon. If VdV (for example) is in the former group, and hence happy for us to also sign Tapsoba, then great. But we shouldn't be assuming anything about the personal thoughts of an individual who we know next to nothing about.

We want players who back themselves.

Why wouldn't VdV think he can get into the first team? Not to mention there are plenty of minutes to go round anyway. Europe is just a handful of games anyway.

People insist on imposing rules and absolutes on everything.......

Is it possible to convince a player to come despite a less that guaranteed starting spot? Of course...... Will every player want to take a bit of such a 'cherry'? No.

..........This really shouldn't be something to attract such conflict or be seen through such a polar lens.
So we shouldn't go for both, or expect to get both?

My guess is they both see a top6 PL club like Spurs as a step up from their current situation, but that's me.

we need 2-3 CB by window close

GK : OK
Full backs: OK
CM: OK
Attack: OK
CB’s: Shit

We play 2 CB’s we have 1 good one when he is fit. We need 2 min, we are a big club if any defender coming doesn’t back themselves to work and fight for a place they obviously aren’t good enough.

Absolutely.

Would have to know the player in question to answer that one.

CBs are a lot less prone to rotation than most other positions.... We could play as little as 38 + 2 games next season which - injury permitting - could spell zero rotation at CB.

Sess, Reggie: Not ok
Davis: steady but slow.
Kane: Possibly leaving.

LB: Udogie/Davies, not perfect but can work
RB: Porro/Royal, pretty decent
Kane: if he leaves I expect us to buy.

A role that doesn't require Davies to fly up and down the wing will likely suit him..... I assume him to be fine as #2.. Bigger concern is Udogie being adaptable to what Ange needs.
