Romero won Serie A defender of the year before we signed him, Tapsoba and VdV are both promising talents but not quite at elite level yet.
Agreed, but I'm talking about what the club sees in Tapsoba, not the accolades he's received.

If the report is true, that we see Tapsoba becoming "huge," then the scenario remains the same.

We've seen CB's going for sums that have almost been exclusively reserved for top end strikers, so there's no reason to believe that getting Tapsoba for say £50M, won't leave us with a defender, provided he does the business, that is worth in excess of what we paid for him.

The critical thing though, is that we've identified him as our top target, so we need to follow through on that.

He has the talent though. Watch Vertoghen under AVB, put in some absolutely god awful performances. Give Romero a decent partner instead of calamity defenders next to him and he will be fine.

I'd hope that Tapsoba & VDV are also viewed to have a higher ceiling than their current level too......

But they're not "elite" yet and neither is Romero.

The only additional 'spanner in the works' that I don't think you've covered above might be if Ange actually prefers VdV to Tapsoba, and we don't want to spoil the VdV deal (which signing Tapsoba too may or may not do, depending on VdV's personal views). If Ange prefers VdV (which of course we don't know), then I can see us signing VdV and Tosin.

IF that is Ange's opinion, and the club ignores him on it, and hence signs Tapsoba but not VdV, then that would be what people keep calling a 'club signing' that ignores what the manager wants...

The problem is always going to be that there are so many bits and pieces and especially opinions (including those of managers and players) that we will never really have sight of...
If that 'spanner in the works' is indeed true, then I feel we'd have already walked away from Tapsoba and signed VDV.

We haven't yet, so I doubt it is true.

Did conte make a creative midfielder a priority last summer? We made signings to CB, LWB, RWB, CM multiple times, ST, LW, RW…. We made a signing in pretty much every position but not a creative midfielder.

That’s good evidence a CM wasn’t a priority for conte.

It also fits with the fact that he played two midfielders. There’s no room for a creative midfielder on there.

The issue isn’t that Milan sussed us out. A lot of teams sussed us out. The issue is that Conte was unable to get the team playing on new patterns so his play was predictable. You could have the 11 best players in their position… if you play the same patterns then teams will suss you out.

I think your focus on players over systems is wrong. We had better players last year than the season before and we did a lot worse, particularly in defence. There are no doubt excuses or reasons but the problem was the system was predictable.
And I think the focus on the system and patterns of play is overstated. We played players in normal football positions, they did normal football things, wing backs got forward, wide players cut in, sometimes defenders rampaged forward, midfielders did midfielder things. You may not have liked the system (and I'm not a fan either) but the idea that every move was prescribed by the manager is a nonsense. From goal kicks sure, but most teams do that now, defensively yes, the players were drilled as they should be. And yes there was certainly a plan to maximize the transition which of course there should be as it's a strength of ours given our squad.

Without the Son and Kulu of the season before we became much easier to play against, Richy was injured and poor and Lucas and Dan were either injured or not good enough.

Kulu's last good game was at home vs Leeds and that was before the world cup. He had injuries and I also think he relaxed without Conte standing on his neck. Son was injured a few times and apparently never recovered properly. There was no way Conte could've predicted this and all the other stuff that meant we regressed. But we were still fourth.

As for CMs we brought in Yves and that is one of my biggest gripes with Conte as he didn't involve him enough and to my mind he's our most complete midfielder - and even he ended up injured too.

The problem wasn't the patterns of play (any examples from open play btw?) but all the stuff I've already explained. Players injured, Conte not standing on their necks because he was grieving and/or sick and the players relaxing as a result - the crux of Conte's rant "the players also need to take responsibility".

He was right - that's not to say he didn't make mistakes, that the style of play was entertaining, it wasn't largely. But the fact remains our league position under him was an outlier in recent years. And outside of the players we had back then, none of these players would've made the first team under Poch in 2017. Not one. At best a couple would've been squad players.

We're signing players now to address this lack of quality especially at CB hopefully. This is itself an admission that the squad needs improving. We've got weaknesses all over the squad and have had since before the CL final - we replaced Dembele and Wanyama with Winks and Sissoko ffs.

Our recruitment was either non existent or poor for too long and it's hurt us - there's direct correlation between our ascent and decline under Poch (with 2017 the apex) and the quality of players at our disposal.

I obviously hope Ange does well, he's smart enough to realise that if he's going to succeed, we need better players. Madison is a good signing on paper, we're desperate for CBs and have been for years, we have to hope that PP and Udogie are the real deal, that Richy, Yves, Kulu, Son come good, that the new keeper is quality. We might get top 4 but there's a significant chunk of our squad I don't trust, a poor mentality that's run through it for too long. And the only time that improved in recent years was under a fit and fully focussed Conte.

I'm hungover and very close to nuking this thread and chucking you all in the bin. Have a day off, chaps.
I'm quite happy to take over admin duties for you today.

The irony here is that many of us labelled as "bots" or "Levy lovers" don't disagree with you.

Apparently I'm a "regime enthusiast" despite posting pretty much the same thing earlier.

That's not nearly enough for some on here. If you are not extolling hate, then you MUST be the enemy.

Even that is not enough though. You have to be rolling the hate diatribe out every day for acceptance.
Ever feel like we all just need a big group hug?

I am talking about transfers though, where are the centre backs?

It's a fair question I feel given the tour is imminent and I've seen this shit so many times from ENIC. Leaving it until the season has already started to make a critical signing.

Do you want to see Dier and Lenglet lining up as our CB pairing next season when Romero gets an injury/suspension?
Loads of the journos have said we’ll bring in 2 CBs. There’s 8 weeks left in the window? Do you actually think we won’t bring a CB in? And even when we do you’ll still blame levy for something else.

we replaced Dembele and Wanyama with Winks and Sissoko ffs.

Not really true though is it......

Both players were already here; during 18-19 MD & VW proved they were no longer physically up to it and in the summer we brought in Ndombele & GLC for big money.... It's glaringly obvious they were meant to be our future.

Also, in that season, we played a mish-mash of Dele, Eriksen, Dembele, Sissoko (who finally found a bit of form) & Winks (who at that point wasn't the shadow of a player he became) as Poch began to experiment with more of a 3 man-style MF which proved be the pre-cursor to his failed Diamond-experiment.

I've not said they don't want to come.......

Come on mate.... You're being needlessly obstinate about this.

Sorry to quote myself, but:

"As I said in my prev. post; we're all united in what we want; but it's folly to close our eyes to external factors just cos they don't suit what we want to see happen."
But how do we know those external factors exist?

Where did this idea come from that VDV or Tapsoba wouldn’t want to come if another good player was also signed?

Old Tweet, but interesting take on our squad needs.

How are we doing?

GK ✅
Creative 8 ✅
1v1 dribbler at LW ✅
CB1 - buildup conductor ❌
CB2 - quick aerial dominator ❌

Personally think biggest need is that CB2 profile. Dier, Romero, Lenglet all lacking aerially and in recovery pace. Whereas Romero (and Lenglet) does at least have buildup qualities.

I think of someone like Chris Smalling as a good fit for that CB2 profile. So, are Tapsoba/VDV/Toisin right for what we need? I'm not sure. I just hope Ange and our recruitment team have a really clear idea of what they want.

It's absolutely true - 2 years after our Poch apex of 2017 we had regressed in league points and position but managed to freakishly reach a CL final. And Sis and Winks both played in that game. So they were the replacements when at most they should've been squad players (although Sis was sub par even as a squad option).

Wanyama was never the same player after the 2016-17 season and Dem was always an injury doubt and rarely a 90 minute player even then. We didn't replace them for two years and only then with players of inferior quality (NDom and lo Celsius) who'd never played in the Prem.

So we relied increasingly on Winks and Sis as you point out and suffered as a result - it was in effect a managed decline that hurt us then and along with some piss poor recruitment, has hurt us since. Players of inferior quality to those they were replacing getting increasing game time.

And that's without the decline in other areas, Rose losing the plot, Walker leaving, Alli going backwards, Eriksen wanting out (4 years later we may have replaced him), Jan and Toby getting old.

The squad declined and so did our performances and league position.

Agree on the diamond. I remember going to Leicester away and ndom playing on the left of it and being asked to cover their RB every time he pushed forward. He clearly wasn't up to it, was blowing out of his arse after 10 minutes. We lost 2-1 and were a shadow of the 2017 team.
