I think it’s almost psychological now, definitely for Davinson. Their heads go down too easily and one mistake is quickly followed by another - Newcastle for instance.
Dier is one of those players that always looks busy but never seems to accomplish much. I look at Romero and sure he plays on the edge but he is crunching the opposition, happy to push up aggressively and comfortable on the ball- Dier doesn’t do that. Lenglet is more passive but he reads the game well and is comfortable on the ball. Diers good in the air, that’s about it.
We need a fresh start at CB
Dier was one of the least dribbled past centre halves in the league, purely because he would back off indefinitely, even if they just had a free shot and scored. I don't know if that's coached or his decision, but I don't remember him being that bad with it previously.
Romero on the other hand would go galivanting up field and dive into tackles - meaning he was dribbled past quite a lot, but also was not there to cover.
For me he looked very naive and not much of a team player at times. Sometimes his actions would make others look bad whilst making himself look 'aggressive' putting himself about.
Yes we need a centre half or 2, but I'm certainly not giving Romero a free pass. From what I saw last season he wasn't good enough and ought to be held to account just as much as the others.
The one thing which is massively overlooked and under appreciated is the impact of losing Bentancur - one of, if not the best central midfielder in the league at that moment in time. With him in the side we were on for a 71+ point season, a tally we ultimately fell 11 points short of. His work with and without the ball, offensively and defensively should not be under estimated. We don't concede 15 goals in 4 games with him in the side. Had that been around 5 conceded (10 fewer) like it ought it have been, we still don't have a fantastic defensive record - but certainly wouldn't be reflected on like it is currently.
Imagine that, 24% of our entire seasons conceded goals coming in 4 defensive horror shows.
