To put it mildly its sub optimal that 8 weeks after last season finished, when we had our worst defensive record for 20 or so years and all but 1 of our centre backs were clearly done that 3 weeks from the start of the new season we havent got 1 new one in.

They really dont do themselves any favours on trying to win people around again.
Somehow such an obvious statement is controversial with some on this forum.

You really do have to worry when you see Villa making significant signings without selling first and then you see us still not signing a CB with 3 weeks to go until the start of the season.

Villa will firmly have an eye on that 5th spot as they know that gets them CL, they are making big boy moves to make it happen.

Pizzes me off no end, sort that defence out, tell Kane he is seeing out his final year and we almost certainly finish top 6 and would be in a great position for top 5. Sure we would lose Kane for nothing and it would be awful if he pitched up elsewhere in the league, but with CL football we might be able to sign a top drawer replacement instead of looking at goal scorers in the Error divisie - obviously hoping lightening strikes twice following the great success we had with Vincent Jannsen

Everyone looked atrocious though. So that's no barometer.

It's not about the dominance. It's about Anges set up at every club he's been at. He doesn't have lumbering forwards dropping deep.

He has strikers who tend to play on the last line of defence, making runs in behind using supreme movement.

Weak West Ham team or not, to have 70% possession and 30 shots is a good sign that we'll be creating chances this season.

We simply need someone who can get on the end of them but be mobile enough to actually run and score them.

If we sell Kane the it's the only option we should explore for the next 12 months. There's simply no realistically affordable striker out there who guarantees us anything.

There's a few promising ones, however they've either been around for one year or just had one good season and the sample size is too small to warrant a gamble when there are bigger glaring issues in the team.

I don't mind Toney.
Yeah I don’t agree that Son’s performances were just a reflection of a poorly performing team. He was especially bad, looked really really scared of getting hurt, unsure of his touch and his overall ball retention was awful.

As I say, let’s hope it’s the injury but we shouldn’t dismiss the notion that he’s on the downside of his career.

As to your point comparing a “lumbering forward” and Son; the 2 obviously aren’t mutually exclusive. My worry is that when we get pinned in by opponents, which will inevitably happen at times during the season, having a CF without any sort of hold up qualities isn’t ideal at all.

As I say I am in favour of giving it a try, but it’s not a silver bullet and I think there’s a chance it doesn’t work in the way you’re hoping.

The owners of Villa are very smart , they may have hired Gerrard but they rectified that mistake quickly . They may struggle with the likes of City , but everyone does and maybe Newcastle in a couple of years but they will be major competition to us .
For anyone that wants to bang on about ‘big club history’, while we were busy winning back-to-back FA Cups, they were equally busy winning the League and the European Cup.

So what striker is magically available this summer, who'd be a better fit than Son up front ?
Can Son play up front and at LW? What LW is magically available this summer that's better than Son?

This is the point: why make 2 positions weaker to cover 1 spot. We've got (if he gets back on form) one of the best LW in world football. Why the fuck would we turn him into an "adequate" CF?

Haven't we now found out though that he was playing injured? Add to that, he was playing alot deeper. Ultimately not playing to his strengths.

He's not a close control dribbler. But he has great movement, still relatively quick and an excellent finisher. Perfect for an Ange #9

Make him captain and give him the spot.

Something I'm sure will be taken into account.

It might not. But neither will be splashing the majority of our Kane fund on a young unproven striker who could be a colossal flop up top.

My fundamental problem is I just don’t trust us to get the recruitment right. I think I’d rather see us loan someone and get through this transition period and work out what our team needs to look like.

Someone like De Ketelaere, who Milan are trying to ship out on loan. Or give Atleti 15 million and take Felix for a season.
Well if we're starting from the assumption that we're gonna fuck up the recruitment we might as well sack Ange and wind up the club. You have to work on the assumption, at least, that you're recruiting competent players.

I agree that I don't have a lot of faith we can do that. But assuming we won't negates the point of even trying.
