People are acting like last season’s goals conceded (shocking) Is the inevitable consequence of the squad that we have. They forget that the season before last we only conceded 40 goals, the fourth lowest in the league, with exactly the same defenders (in fact, arguably worse).

So I think the current players can do significantly better next year with some proper coaching. I’m confident we’ll concede less with a far more attacking style of play.

Of course I want a first choice LCB to come in on top but football fans are goldfish.

Dear me...

NO! We need more CBs full stop. I have no confidence AT ALL with Dier in the backline. The fact we didn't concede many goals 2 years ago with 5 at the back is no comfort.

You're ignoring the GLARING fact that we were set up to play 11-0-0. Of course we're not going to ship goals.

But now, we have an attack-minded coach, and therefore need better defenders.

The defence is shit, it needs improving. Fail to do this and we're back to the Ossie days not that you'd have a clue about that.

You know I actually don’t mind the bulk of this under Ange.
The glaring issue is obviously the centre backs, and lack of a Royal like player on the left, which I think will actually come to bite us.

Also just get Hojberg out of this line up please

Im not sure he is saying the defence doesn't need improving, more that improvements in other areas of our tactics and, especially our midfield will improve us too.

Even if we do get 2 new CB's only 1 is going to start alongside Romero and my personal view is that will only improve our goal against so much. There are other circumstances that led to us being peppered with nearly 400 shots against last season and conceding 63.

This is true but also naive.

We might only be peppered with 200 shots vs 400 in Ange’s high line and attacking style, BUT the xG of these 200 shots will be very high, a lot of breakaways and 1v1s with the keeper as we’ve already seen in preseason.

Top defenders are needed to not gift gilt edged chances to the opponents.

what a clusterfuck. I couldn’t think of worse preparation for the season. 3 weeks until opening matchday and ZERO new defenders, still 6 senior players over the squad limit, a bloated mess of deadwood, all clouded by massive uncertainty over our star striker…

And seemingly, Kane stops us from making any progress on any other transfer in the entire bloody football club, be it VdV or Tosin or Hojbjerg or Sanchez or even an easy youth deal like Ash Phillips.

No. We have to put the entire operation on ice to sort out the Kane situation, which will inevitably be dragged out for weeks to squeeze £3m extra, and completely stall any other transfers in the pipeline.

I hate this shite football club so much. We aren’t serious. The behavior listed above is that of rank amateurs.

If Ange somehow brings us success this season he’s not just world class, he’s a bloody miracle worker.

I completely agree, same with a top goal keeper (Vicario - remains to be seen) and playing top midfielders who are much better at keeping the ball and moving it forward (Bissouma, Maddison)

We played low-block football with 3 centre backs, two defensive minded midfielders and at times we even had a defensive right back .. no shit our defensive record wasn't bad. Under Ange we will have more of the ball but will push defenders up high which means the likes of Dier will be caught with their pants down and Udogie/Porro who have question marks over them defensively could easily be caught out positionally.

We have a lot of defenders suited to a 5 best, so citing them once doing alright in a 5 isn't all that convincing, especially when they will need to take more risks with the ball which is where Dier starts panicking. Romero/Dier is also an awful 2, one will charge out to kill the danger and the other is incredibly shit when he's left isolated.

Why do you think the formation is at all explanatory of the difference between the 21/22 and 22/23 seasons? It was the same thing.

Because in 22/23 Conteball fell apart. Low block systems require a LOT of focus to work. For less than a season with the fresh Conte factor, players at this club could do it. But that went and then the players started turning against Conte as well.

Our defence was not particularly good in 20/21 and was one of the worst in the top half in 19/20. Yeah it got particularly crap in 22/23 and that was probably them at their worst, but these aren't top defensive options by any stretch. This is all despite being dedicated to defensive football for these seasons.
