What do you think is best realistic way to replace Kane? Let's assume we can re-invest the £90m.

Panic & cry.

No, for real though .. there's no CF out there who can replace him. So as much as its a huge risk you probably count Son and Richy as striker options and then MASSIVELY strengthen out wide and make that your primary source of goals. If there is a Firmino type on the market then go for him, because none of the out and out scorers we can attract excite me.

Diaby would've been nice, just to have a very different prospect to Kulu on the right. With 90m burning a hole in our pocket could we tempt Milan for Leao? Probably not but might as well try our arm. If Villa can pull P. Torres and Diaby then we can shock people too, if we're willing to pay.

I like Eze, a lot. Bringing him in would add a shit load excitement to our team. But overall the idea I think would be add quality elsewhere, where we can actually get it. The list of exciting players at LW/RW is a lot deeper than ones at CF.

(All of this of course would be much less terrifying if we still hadn't added a single CB to our team. Now we're faced with losing Kane AND fixing the CB situation all with less than 2 weeks to go till our first game .. what a fucking mess.)

Right, but my concern that even Leao and RKM, who you wouldn't regard as elite, are unlikely to want to join us either.

Bit premature to be declaring it as good as fact that neither would come though, no?

Esp. Muani who isn't exactly playing for a behemoth of a club atm.......

More broadly; when we're talking about "elite" players I tend to assume maybe top 5 in the world in their position; who you'd expect to have their sights set on "elite" clubs (and when I say "elite" clubs I mean ones that can be vaguely relied upon to win leagues & CLs).....

If Lo Celso is wanting out, can see some merit in him as a swap, but those wages and him being somewhat laterally challenged (too bulky for me, would break in the prem, my suspicion).

Surely we can find another Sarr level potential kid, 21-23 ideally with super physiology (see: Bellingham - presuming Dortmund weren’t doping the kid).

Lo Celso noise is that he's staying now.

Who knows...

Agree that he looks laterally challenged for the prem.

Decent player but not for me.

Who have we not signed today?
swing out dance GIF

You’re talking bollox. His market value is what someone is will to pay.

.........And so you're saying if someone's starting bid is low that determines the market value and you should just take it?

BMs initial €70 bid for Kane is "market value"?

WHam should have accepted 80m-odd for Rice?

It's SUCH a good thing you aren't doing the negotiations.

You're backtracking. Your point was that our defence was good enough for 40 goals once, so it should be again. Our point was you're missing the fact that we've changed formation and strategy and it will not be to play to their strengths. Saying we're missing an LCB is like breathing downwind.
That wasn’t my point at all. Did you read the post?

The only remotely controversial bit should have been:

« I think the current players can do significantly better next year with some proper coaching. I’m confident we’ll concede less with a far more attacking style of play »

Everything else was either factual or me saying I want a LCB.

To reply to Hotspurpaul Hotspurpaul - I think the reaction to that post is testament to how unstable the fanbase is at the moment. It’s bad enough during a normal transfer window but people have lost their minds this year.

Because in 22/23 Conteball fell apart. Low block systems require a LOT of focus to work. For less than a season with the fresh Conte factor, players at this club could do it. But that went and then the players started turning against Conte as well.

Our defence was not particularly good in 20/21 and was one of the worst in the top half in 19/20. Yeah it got particularly crap in 22/23 and that was probably them at their worst, but these aren't top defensive options by any stretch. This is all despite being dedicated to defensive football for these seasons.
2019-20 - 7th best defensive record
2020-21 - 6th best defensive record
2021-22 - 4th best defensive record
2022-23 - 15th best defensive record

Which is the odd one out?

Come on Deuterz Deuterz - you don’t need to fit a narrative to the evidence. Those are the facts and it’s clear which season is the anomaly.

These players are clearly capable of doing better than they have and to disagree runs counter to all the evidence. I am super in favour of signing a top class centreback but anyone objective can see that a lot of people are being blinded by one terrible season in their assessment - the most obvious case of recency bias you could imagine.
