The Musiala one is basically the exact same issue that he shows in the U21 match
I don't think they're too similar at all outside of the goals coming from an individual run.
The Netherlands one is a lot worse, he pretty much fails to engage. But there's no chance I'd be putting all the blame on van de Ven for the Musiala one.
Musiala picks the ball up on the right wing and still manages to get through about 4 challenges before it even comes to van de Ven. That's a system issue and I'd be fuming if the goal happened against Spurs at all this season and van de Ven would be the last person I'd blamed for it. He's weak in the tackle for the goal, looks like he moves out of the way almost (Until you realise Musiala simply deceives him with his footwork)
Tapsoba has also made some errors that alarm me too. But he’s a lot less clumsy in tight spaces and he is better on the ball, better tackler, better in the air, his qualities make up for it. VdV is really good at chasing players and that’s about it for now.
I think van de Ven's aesthetic makes him look a lot clumsier than he is, he certainly has a unique way about him in terms of how he moves and perhaps lacks the aggression that Tapsoba does but I don't think he's particularly clumsy in a way that say, Davinson Sanchez is.
I saw a video posted on Twitter earlier blasting van de Ven in his pre-season game yesterday because of the way he looked in how he defended. Yet the attacker went absolutely nowhere and Wolfsburg ended up winning the ball back because of it.
The only issue I truly have with van de Ven is that he tends to show his back to the defender more than I'd like. Though I also thought the same of Jan Vertonghen, but Jan used his intelligence to read it, van de Ven seems to use his pace to get him out of any trouble
I was fine with spending nearly €50m on Romero because he had won Serie A defender of the season, had Argentinian NT pedigree, was a truly gifted ball carrier, etc.
Comparing Van de Ven to Romero in 2021 is hardly a comparison, and that my point, if we’re paying £40m we better be damn sure this guy is the one, like we were for Romero.
It's not my money, so I can't say I really care too much on what we spend on a centre back.
I'll always back any signing that comes here. And I'll base my opinion on him as a Spurs player and from what he does in a Spurs shirt.
