Certainly doesn't look it but I do put a bit of weight on fans views when we buy a player. Based on past he was as close to 15 goals a year guaranteed striker, if that's worth 60m these days I don't know.

Obviously that 15 looks a bit difficult for him on what we've seen so far.
I'm always concerned about players who score freely for bottom clubs. They're very rarely ever playing against a packed defence like we were yesterday. A real quality forward can score in those situations. He wouldn't have scored yet if we were still playing

This has all happened in six months. They will have a clear strategy and objective, they aren’t just blindly spending with no goal. The CL makes sense

They have unlimited money - they will pay player £1M per week, the differential is so vast that they will go when they are in the CL. Might not be a bad thing for us as a club tbh
Building insane squad before UEFA accept their application. Do it now and the foundations are already in place

Re: Saudi, I had a beer with an ex player involved in the PFA on Friday…. Apparently the PL clubs are terrified of Saudi and are trying to shut down efforts them joining the CL and expect it to be game over for the PL when UEFA let them in the next few years. Will be a changing of the guard and the Saudis will really go big at that point and wrestle sponsorships, TV deals etc and be the big player a few years after. They did it with golf and they will do it with football

I actually thought they would somehow buy UEFA or start their own Super League with Barca, Juve etc but this seems more plausible
your mate could be right, but I’ve worked for both FIFA and UEFA and have been involved (at a low level) in the governance of sport for a while. I’m pretty sure the International Feds (IFs) have a policy whereby Continental Federations (CFs) can only be made up of National Associations (NAs) in their region.

it’s all to do with how teams filter into the World Cups and how ranking points are assigned. FIFA already have access to the Saudi money so they are unlikely to let a none European side to join a none European CF, it would screw the whole model.

It’s a very different setup to golf that you speak about. Whilst their is a similar setup in golf, it applies more to the amateur level. The PGA is a separate product that isn’t split by nation, it’s effectively a big mixed tour.

He has scored a fair few for Brazil (not saying he is brazils number 9 so he must be good... Fred), you would expect packed defenses there.

Again though, they play loads of friendlies against pretty average sides, their qualifiers are usually against nobodies and even WC group stage goals are often against whipping boys. International football in many ways is far inferior to top league football

The thing with the Saudi league is that it takes more than just great players, you need great clubs, history, rivalry, atmosphere - things you just can’t buy or manufacture.

They aren’t going to have a Tottenham vs Woolwich, Liverpool vs United. They don’t have iconic stadiums, they don’t have the history.

Give the 2 best Saudis teams all the greatest players in the world and have them play each other at the same time as Liverpool vs United - both fielding decent sides without superstars and no one is watching the Saudi game.
I think signing Dier would go a long way in validating their league

Agree but money talks. Israel? Turkey? Some big UEFA clubs are at deaths door and this might be a way for UEFA to defend against them breaking away and busting UEFA. What you say makes complete sense

Best signing we could make is Paul Barber

What else exactly is a "squad player" meant to constitute????? (This is like the whole Winks/Davies/PEH thing all over again..... "They're ok as a squad player..... Just don't play them otherwise we'll crucify them for not being as good as the #1 in their position" *** )

See above post about Biss/alt #6....... No HQuality player is gonna wanna sign up just in case our #1 gets a season long injury. with out at least Europe to balance out the game-time.

(***Rant not exclusively towards you; just that the whole "squad player" thing blows my mind!)
I think Gio is a useful squad player because he can do a job in all 3 midfield roles and even cover in the front 3 at a push.

My point is that he cannot replicate the creativity of Maddison.

Most top teams have more than 1 creative player and we need the same.

Right (we differ in defining them, but nevertheless).... By your definition, this whole idea that we can get another equally high quality alt. to each of Maddison & Biss to sit on their arse on a weekly basis is utterly preposterous.

FWIW my def.: If you're genuinely considered (by the gaffa; not shit-talking no marks on the web) not to be good enough to be a backup in your primary position then you should be on the trf list.... The idea that there's this hinterland where players are "squad players" yet shouldn't be played if the #1 is unavailable is a nonsense.

..............2 x 11s and a few additional players to beef up the depth.

Many people insisted that no Europe could be a positive; but seem to not grasp the ramifications of the additional game-time when it comes to squad building.
Please explain to me how all the other top clubs can manage it but plucky old Spurs could never?

Europe the only factor? Convenient for our first season out of it in forever.

And not all positions are created equal. Not saying we need 4 top class CBs. Just one more in and leave Sanchez/Phillips as 4th choice and that will do. But having only 1 truly creative midfield is a crazy risk.

We have the perfect opportunity with selling PEH too. Replace him with more Maddison than a Gallagher type.
