My brother I was replying to this comment:

Those 2 scumbags could bid whatever and we'd be able to have a €30M bid accepted, once that happens it's down to the player to choose who to join and I shouldn't have to tell you they'll offer better wages.
We get something out of it regardless, as we'd get a significant percentage of the transfer fee. I do think, however, that there's a pre-agreement signed with the player too, meaning he's basically ours if we want him. Will have to wait on the details of the deal, however, which should come out in the next few days.

Window Pluses

We have kept every player we wanted to keep;
We have added the fourth highest goalscorer in the division last season (Solanke)
We have added a PL experienced RW/LW winger (Odobert)
We have added top young talents in Gray, Bergvall;
We have moved on all of the deadwood in a single window apart from Reguilon; (that's been a big job)

Window minuses
Needed to bring in an experienced back up GK (upgrade Forster) - but we run into UEFA squad limits as its likely we need to exclude Forster from our UEFA squad
Needed to bring in a LB/LCB (upgrade Davies) - but probably need this to be a back up LB to avoid blocking Vuskovic, Phillips and maybe Dorrington path to first team next season.

Solid 6/10 and good base to build from in next year or two

No.

And for all my being daft, presumably the issue we would have is that even if we exercise the option, he has to agree?

So if he is genuinely in demand, I’m not entirely sure how our option helps. Betis would have to agree to it, but if he says ‘no’, they’d just agree to a larger offer from a different club.

I agree, LR had a very similar take which I also agree with:

Ok window overall, but at first impression not what we needed to catch up to the top 3. More work will need to be done in January most likely.

I'm assuming the player has been consulted and has shown willing.

Otherwise the discussion went like this:

'Would you join us if we wanted you next year?'
'No'
'We will take a €30m option anyway please Betis'

Sure, of course.

But that means next to nothing. If he really is in demand and Juve/PSG et al come knocking, there’s nothing we can do.

Just seems a bit pointless.

In fact, to be effective, you’d expect it to not be publicly disclosed.

In all honesty, it seems like a weird worded way of basically saying this is an unofficial loan and we'll be signing him if he continues the trajectory he's on.

Like we've learnt from the Jack Clarke deal. Where we signed him, sent him on loan back to Leeds and they thought fuck developing him further, he's not ours.

Whereas this sort of gives incentive for Betis to keep playing and developing him, hoping he does well enough so they get paid.

He seems to have a €80m release clause, so we've sort of negotiated that down and only we have the option. Of course, nothing stopping others from offering more if he does well, but they'd have to accept our deal regardless.

There's something to be said for establishing relationship with players. I remember Chelsea wanted to gazump us for Richarlison, but he rejected them cause we came for him first and he gave us his word.
