An interesting read. Is everyone 'sports washing'?

AIB shows you don’t need to go to Saudi Arabia to see sportswashing in action
4 July
Despite a record fine for its role in the tracker mortgage scandal, AIB is still a cherished sponsor of the GAA

Tickets beginning to get offered around - friend has acquired some: group, quarters and semi-final tickets.

Semis are face value, so about £300. Flight to Qatar on 12th Dec, watch game 13th, fly home 14th is about £1000. Plus another £1000 for hotel, taxis and orange juice.

Zero takers. for any of them. Might miss out on England v Brazil, but just as easily could be Belgium v Uruguay. Also just before Christmas......no thanks. This will be a world cup of half empty stadiums and bussed in children or slave labourers.

A rare protest a couple of weeks ago by migrant workers about conditions and (lack of) pay has resulted in.....all the protestors being deported. Look forward to all the players and managers skirting around the issue.

I genuinely hope the entire thing is such an enormous flop it leads to FIFA crumbling.

sadly the reality is, the big money for FIFA and the event is made well in advance of a ball being kicked.
  • Money donate by Qatar for FIFA 'development' projects
  • Broadcast rights sold globally
  • Partnership and sponsorship deals signed
Ticketing and full stadiums is more of a way for Qatar to recoup their investment. When an event comes to town, local businesses in the hospitality sector also get a massive boost, and tax repays part of the state investment. In the case of Qatar, they don't need to recoup this revenue.

They will most likley bus in corporate, schools etc. so no seat is empty, perhaps even incentivising those who turn up. Crowd noise will also be piped in. The players might feel the lack of atmosphere but on TV the charade will pass unnoticed to many.

There will also likely be a communication embargo whereby teams aren't allowed to discuss certain subjects, as doing so could lead to their expulsion... no country is risking that. Each countries league (the FA in our case), stands to make decent money for competing, coupled with sponsorship and shirt sales. There will be a communications briefing and teams/players will be warned!

And that ladies and gentlemen is how money ruined the game!

Oh for sure money isn’t the issue at the Qatar WC lol.

But what might sink it is a truly awful tournament experience. Empty stadiums, some heavy handed put down of protests, some players or managers actually having the decency to speak up. Look forward to a Gareth Southgate’s lecture on decency.

Have hopes, but they are dim

It will all be swept under the rug. FIFA are getting their money and exposure where they want it. Their boxes are well and truly ticked. Anyone protesting will get carted away.

Will there be time before our first WC game for the England team to process the new lyrics to our National Anthem?

At this stage it's hard to see the difference to commercially owned franchise tournaments.
