I think all the shit things happen to us because we are the only fuckers built to take it...

Us and Atletico Madrid fans. There are other clubs like it but those two stand out, big history, big support and lots of hope only to be let down (although they won the EL so maybe they broke their curse)

Meanwhile their star player is being bought by a Russian oligarch.

Just to be clear - Benfica can still win the title this weekend if Porto fail to win and Benfica beat Moreirense (second last team)

i.e. same situation as us - 1 point behind going into the last game

Am I scraping the bottom of the barrel when I say that Chelski winning the EL this year against Benfica has raised the profile of the competition (if not the class), rendering it even harder for cunts to deny that it's a worthwhile competition in its own right, towards the level of the CL competition?

I think I am.

the likelihood of that happening when Porto are playing the 3rd place team that are guaranteed 3rd (their best position ever) is pretty unlikely. I have hope for Sunday. Might be time to go back to church

Benfica apparently are cursed:
Béla Guttmann: Coach and manager of some the world’s leading football teams, including AC Milan, São Paulo FC, FC Porto, Benfica and C.A. Peñarol. His greatest success came with Benfica when he guided them to two successive European Cup wins in 1961 and in 1962. After the 1962 final Guttmann approached the Benfica board of directors and asked for a pay rise, but, despite the success he had brought the club, he was turned down. On leaving Benfica he allegedly cursed the club, declaring "Not in a hundred years from now will Benfica ever win a European Cup". Despite being finalists on seven occasions – 1963, 1965, 1968, 1983, 1988, 1990 and 2013 – Benfica have never since won any European Championship. Before the 1990 final, which was played in Vienna, where Guttmann was buried,Eusébio even prayed unsuccessfully at his grave and asked for the curse to be broken.

i heard about this but t least they get to win titles and cups, when i was in Portuga Benfica fans told me about the curse ,they joked about it ... not sure they do it at the moment

Think with some major reconstruction the Europa League can be a top competition, need to ditch the silly amount of games, stop the carling cup winners getting in and have 5th place only from the leagues (or their equivalent) and move it to Tuesdays. Give it some real credibility. And stop the CL drops out from entering!!

Some bloke ( Rob Harris) is saying from 2015 winners of the Europa will go into the Champions League the next season

Q: What are the Champions League rule changes?
A: From 2015-16, the Europa League winners and the Champions League winners will both qualify for the following season's Champions League.

Q: Will the maximum number of clubs from the top nations such as England in the Champions League remain at four clubs?
A: No, there will be a maximum of five clubs but only under special circumstances.

Q: When can a country have five clubs in the Champions League?
A: Only when a club wins the Champions League or Europa League but finishes outside the top four in the domestic league. That happened last season when Chelsea finished sixth in the Premier League but took the Champions League spot from Tottenham who finished fourth, because they were European champions.

Q: Will a country be able to have six clubs if both Champions League and Europa League winners come from the same nation and both finish outside of the top four?
A: No - five is the maximum. In that unlikely scenario, the European trophy winners would qualify plus the top three.

Q: If the Champions League or Europa League winners finish inside the top four of their domestic league, will that allow the runners-up to qualify?
A: No, only the winners.

Q: Will the Europa League winners go straight into the group phase of the Champions League?
A: That has still to be confirmed but it appears that will usually be the case.

Q: If the Champions League or Europa League winners also qualify via their domestic league, will that allow the fifth-placed club in the league to take the 'spare' qualification place?
A: No, in that scenario there would still only be four clubs qualifying.
